"Minefield" Stages Romulan Rebound With Highest Overnight Ratings of the Season

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 11:52, 3 October 2002 / Enterprise

The overnight metered market ratings are in for UPN's Wednesday night first-run presentation of "Minefield," the highly-anticipated episode featuring the first appearance of the Romulans in the prequel series. The episode scored the highest overnight numbers for the show's sophomore season, even as UPN came in behind rival WB for the night.

With a 5.1 rating and 8 share--meaning that an estimated 8% of television viewers watching during the hour were tuned in--"Minefield" beats the season premiere "Shockwave, Part II" by two tenths of a percentage point in the overnight figures (4.9/8) and improves even further on last week's "Carbon Creek" (4.8/7), according to Zap2it. ENTERPRISE took the fifth place spot in the eight o'clock hour behind MY WIFE AND KIDS, THE GEORGE LOPEZ SHOW, ED, 60 MINUTES II and Fox's baseball playoff coverage.

MediaWeek's Programming Insider by Marc Berman calls ENTERPRISE's performance last night "always reliable." The first two episodes of the season garnered 4.9 and 4.84 million viewers respectively, so expect the final audience size for "Minefield" to surpass these. Adult 18-49 numbers will also likely increase.

Elsewhere in the television landscape, NBC dominated the night with its second episode of the Emmy-winning THE WEST WING at nine o'clock followed by the season premiere of LAW & ORDER at ten. NBC averaged 10.3/17 for the night followed by ABC and FOX with 6.8/11, CBS's 6.2/10, the WB's 4.7/7 and UPN's 4.4/6. The WB's DAWSON'S CREEK was ahead of the third episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE with a 4.7/7, thought Berman comments that ZONE's 3.8/5 represents a 6% increase over last week's second episode.

The performance of "Minefield" represents somewhat of a recovery for ENTERPRISE, which was named yesterday in a report by Media Life Magazine as one major contributing reason for UPN's season "sinking like a rock" thusfar. You may reach that article here.

Is it just me? | Report this post to moderator

Is it just me or is this season boring? Each episode seems like it could easily fit into a half hour show. I want to see the birth of the Federation not another rehash of the same old dull crap. They only have 6 seasons left and there is so many things that they could explore with this show. Unfortunately they keep wasting the episodes on stories like this.

I thought about this and I think they are making it boring on purpose. TNG and DS9 were also very boring in the initial seasons but they skyrocketed in quality after that. This wouldn't have been possible without the boring episodes because those were the episodes that were building CHARACTER.

Minefield was boring but we learned something more about what kind of persons Malcolm and Archer are.

Be patient. They are only laying the foundations. I hope there's gonna be some kickass stuff coming up next season that makes this feel more like the Star Trek we love.

prelimenary is suppose to be boring.

I'll also mention that 6 seasons = 6 years for christ's sakes. 6 years!! Lots can happen then.

Also, this "season" that is so "boring" has had 3 episodes.

National ratings for "Minefield" | Report this post to moderator
By: Cyrus (Odo's file, contact) @ 22:58:58 on Oct 03, 2002

National ratings for "Minefield" are out, though Variety only reports the A18-49 rating. It got a 2.5/7 which is better than "Shockwave II" (2.3/7) and "Carbon Creek" (2.4/7). TZ made a nice recovery.

From Variety:
UPN's male-skewing combo of "Enterprise" (2.5/7 in 18-49) and "Twilight Zone" (1.8/5) surprisingly rebounded week-to-week opposite baseball. "Enterprise" earned its best scores in three tries this season, while "Twilight" was up 38% week-to-week.

More info about the national rating for "Minefield". mediaweek reported the national ratings for Twilight Zone (2.6/4, 3.89 million viewers). They also reported the avg rating for UPN on Wednesday (3.0/5, 4.57 million viewers). This implies that "Minefield" got something like a 3.4 rating with 5.25 million viewers, the actual numbers might be slightly different.

Yes I'm certainly glad that it looks like "Minefield" has reclaimed some ground for ENT.

Did anybody catch that really horrible edit in the teaser? That's inexcusable...

The "teaser" that I am referring to is the first few minutes of an episode before the opening theme. That is what you so lovingly refer to as being "what the hizzhell" I am talking about. Reed and Archer are sitting at the table. Watch it. If you can't catch the horrible editing, then "what the hizzhell" is wrong with you. :-)

More "Ratings Stunt" episodes and less overall originality. Since people turned into to see the Romulans, B&B will be rumaging through TOS aliens and ruining the continuity even more. How long befor the Tholians or Gorn apear or Gary 7 or Kirks Great Grandfather.

Boy does this show stink.

They can't show the Gorn because Kirk was the first to meet them ... and Enterprise has already pulled the "oh, but they *really* met Archer first" scenario with the Ferengi and now the Romulans.

But, yeah, the Tholians should be popping up (Tholia was mentioned in the pilot) as well as the Tellarites (mentioned twice so far, and Westmore is interested in "re-imagining" them).

Although it kinda sucks that UPN ended up in 6th place, it's good to see that Enterprise isnt just dropping off completely.

This was a nice 6.25% increase in the overnight rating and TWZ also increased.

I really liked this episode. I thought it was one of the better episodes overall. There was good chemistry between Reed and Archer. That and Archer's plan for defusing/blowing up the mine was pretty exciting as well.
