Shame half the aliens didn't make it into the movie though! Put them in the next one, JJ.

And Trek 11 should have got noms for cinematography, art direction, music and maybe costume design.

Everyone goes on and on about how groundbreaking Avatar was. But really? Motion capture suits and CGI. Seems like that was all done before.

The true groundbreaking work this year was in the use of shakycams combined with lensflares. Someone is going to be winning a lifetime achievement award in a few years.

We can now call it the Academy Award winning "Star Trek". To which I say, suck it, haters.

Congrats on the win.

I still think Trek should have won the other categories as well. Unfortunately Dances with Smurfs won for Visual Effects despite being mainly a cartoon. Up was a CG animated film as well and it wasn't nominated for best visual effects. On the flip side I thought it odd that Pocahontas: Insurrection wasn't nominated for best animated film.

Note this is all in jest, however, I still don't understand the hype for Avatar besides the artificially created kind that has convinced people that a rehash of old plotlines and cliches is actually a good movie just because it's kind of pretty. (Although, Zoe Saldana is hot no matter what character she is playing.)

There was no competition for Avatar when it came to the special effects Oscar. We all love Star Trek, but let's face it; it did not have the level of CGI and 3D magic that went into James Cameron's film. Story aside (and yes we have heard every tired "Smurf" and "Pocahontas" reference by now) Avatar was a movie experience that was unmatched. Our next best hope is that Star Trek XII will hit the ball out of the park a la The Dark Knight.

Indeed, and this just goes to show how biased the Academy is when it comes to doling out Oscars.

ST should have won for "Best Picture Starring Zoe Saldana"; Avatar, for "Best Picture Starring An Animated Zoe Saldana"; and The Hurt Locker for "Best Picture Not Starring Zoe Saldana".

Fortunately, Up In The Air got the gong for "Best Picture In Which The Lead Character Visits A City Where Zoe Saldana Once Lived", while Sandra Bullock got "Best Non-Zoe Saldana Actress" for The Blind Side.
