I'll say it again for the hundredth time - there should've been an extended cut for DVD.

That will come later so Paramount can get us to pay for another copy of the movie. Then we'll get a Director's Cut, a Special Edition, a Collector's Edition, and a Remastered Edition. Then it will come out on the next media format after Blu-Ray.

That's my take on it as well. I am trying to count how many SE/DC/etc. editions of Stargate that here been over the years. I've lost count.

Lol... I'd agree, but there's still no Nemesis extended version - then again, that wasn't exactly as popular as Trek 11.

But if there were an extended edition it would probably be a lot better and more well received than the theatrical cut.

I think Abrams proved that if you do actually listen to the fans, good stuff happens.

I like the mask concept.

Eh. The mask is cool looking, but I was hoping to see their take on Klingon makeup, personally. The mask is almost a cop-out, IMO.

Hmmm...(Fanboy Alert): Maybe they wear masks with ridges to hide their "human looking" faces since the events of ENT: Divergence. After all, that would still be canon in this timeline. Could be an interesting character trait of the "new" Klingons. ;)

I think the real reason is that the producers didn't want to spend money 'redesigning' or 'augmenting' the Klingons for a minor role in the movie.

That sounds like a good theory. And using masks would mean the actors would spend virtually no time in the make up chair, if any at all. Those masks looked good, but I bet they were probably fabricated in a very short time.

Some time ago there was an extensive behind-the-scenes article on the make-up including lots of photos. They also showed the Klingons. While the mask hides most of the face in the final product, there was still considerable prosthetics works involved. You can see some of it around the eyes.
In any case: Saving make-up time on the actors probably wasn't the (primary) reason for the masks.
