J.J. Abrams Praises Star Trek Actor Chris Hemsworth Casting as Thor

MTV posted a new interview with J.J. Abrams in which he talks about the casting of Star Trek actor Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk) as Thor. Here are few excerpts from the article.

While his heroic role fetched plenty of fan support, Hemsworth's biggest booster to date may just be his Trek director Abrams who had nothing but great things to say about the actor's performance.

"It's very exciting. We really lucked out," Abrams told MTV News in an exclusive interview ahead of the "Star Trek" DVD/Blu-Ray release next month. "He's so crazy handsome and he's so strapping with the classic leading man look. I sort of wish I had dirtied him up a little bit, messed his hair up a little bit."

"[Hemsworth] was in a moment where he was trying to figure out what his next thing was going to be and he stayed strong in terms of what his commitments were to various projects. I knew that he was going to be given a lot of opportunities sooner or later and I was hoping it would be off of Trek," said Abrams.

The full interview is here.

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. I think Thor will do for Hemsworth the same thing Trek has done for Chris Pine. He is an excellent actor and cant wait to see him as Thor (but who will play Doctor Don Blake ???)

Yeah, the guy definitely had that classic handsome thing going on.

The opening scene between he and Jennifer Morrison is probably my favorite from the entire film (that, and the Superman Returns-like credits at the end).

Funny, because though I get the most emotional watching the interaction between George and Wynonna at the beginning? To my film friends and I, the closing credits were one of our least favorite parts of the movie. They were overblown, overdone and a simple scrolling text would have been good enough. I think J.J. went a little too campy there.

Or maybe it was a nice homage to the original series.

TOS was loaded with campy moments, though it seems--maybe because of the reverence fans have developed for it's social and allegorical underpinnings--people have forgotten that. ST(09) was in that same spirit of fun and, yes, "camp" (Kirk's fat hands, 'Womulans', Scotty's little buddy, Checkov's trouble with English, Bones calling Spock a hobgoblin etc). It had more in common with it's source material, in terms of tone, than any other Trek film that came before it (which probably, in part, explains it's success).

So I think the closing credits were not only appropriate, but almost necessary.

People will try to say that TVH was campy as well, but it actually wasn't. It's style of humor was very Nick Meyer (which is the opposite of camp).

In terms of my personal favorite comedic moment from the film, it has to be Nero's response when Pike introduces himself.

PIKE: "This is Captain Christopher Pike of the starship Enterprise."

      NERO: "Hello Christopher, I'm Nero."

Nobody else in that theater laughed but me. The same thing happened for NEM (a movie I otherwise disliked) during this exchange between Shinzon and B4:

      SHINZON: You may go.

      B4: Where?

      SHINZON: Out of my sight.

I'm not sure what I find so funny about those two bits, but...yeah. ;)
