Star Trek Enterprise The Romulan War Beneath the Raptor's Wing

Review by Jeff Ayers

Author Michael Martin tackles the beginning of the Romulan War in his latest Enterprise novel.  Set almost immediately after the events chronicles in Kobayashi Maru, this book focuses on the growing conflict not only between Earth and the Romulans, but also between allies and crew members.

Huge in scope and with an enormous cast of characters, this is the perfect novel if you enjoy war chronicles.  As a story that explores Captain Archer and the rest of the Enterprise crew, it falls flat.  Archer lives with the guilt of not being able to save the vessel at the end of the last book and some of his crew demand transfers.  Just this plot line alone could make an outstanding story.  But, after a quick mention and a few pages, it's hardly ever mentioned again.  Other threads are also compressed.  Huge chunks of the book pass before characters like Archer appear.  I understand that Martin was going for epic scale, but shorting the characters makes it read more like a news story than a novel.

You can tell I'm torn.  I love the cameos and the story when the crew we know must deal with the horrors of war.  The rest?  Well written, but not as interesting as I hoped.  Still, I will happily pick up the next one.

6.5 out of 10

...what do you really think about it? A few words doesn't necessarily sell the book to readers.

...and I love your DVD and media reviews for TrekWeb. Cant wait for your reviews of the Roddenberry pilots Genesis II and Planet Earth. I am sure they will be awesome and detailed reviews, with lots of trivia and info.

But in the case of Jeff Ayers, he choses to writer shorter and direct to the point reviews (check his book Voyages of the Imagination) and also, he has a lot of family issues to take care these days. He knows about the criticism and is doing his best to bring book reviews to TrekWeb.

Is there a way to get this job? Or part of it?

Would I need access to advanced copies of the novels? Or would I simply need to buy them like everyone else?

I would be prepared to pay for the books... but I can not afford them all. I could concentrate on say TOS, or something along those lines.

I also have a BeBook, so I can read electronic copies of the novels.

Yep, I think Jeff gets advanced copies of the novels from the guys at Pocket Books, Stilgar. But, you see, Jeff is really, really busy at the moment with a lot of stuff going on, and so he got little time to reviews, but he is part of the TrekWeb team and I am glad for it.

I am just saying I would enjoy joining in on the reviews... if it is possible, and if there is an opening :)

I do not want to take over the whole job - just help out. I have neither the time nor the inclination to review all the novels, but I could manage say the TOS and connected novels.

Just an idea. You know best if it is possible. If it is, let me know.
