Star Trek Online Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich confirmed during an interview with Videogamer.com (via MMORPG.com) that the sci-fi MMO "will be out the first quarter of 2010." If all goes according to plan, you can expect to take command of your starship between January and March of next year.

As for the closed beta, Zinkievich said its "really just right around the corner. I think that there's a press release that's going to go out in just a couple of days." You can still apply to be a part of the the beta on the official Web site.

The original report can be found here.

Let me know when this game resembles Star Trek, and you might get me interested. Until that day, I'll pass.

Well, its a grand, epic, impressive game which features conflicts with the Klingons, Romulans, Remans and of course, the Borg. Its Star Trek in the 25th Century,a mixture of war and exploration, as far as I know. I will play it out of curiosity, I admit.

Sir, we ask all visitors to please not feed the trolls. Feeding makes them cranky and likely to strike out in irrational and crazy ways. There is also the off chance that you will do temporary or permanent damaged to your IQ. Thank you.

Listen, jackass, I'm hardly a troll. I've been a Trek fan as long as I can remember, I've been a member of this board since 2000, and I have a very valid opinion. Just because it might not agree with yours hardly makes me a troll.

This game does not resemble Star Trek in any way that I recognize. It's merely some fanboys' version of the Star Trek universe. I would have liked to have seen a game that took place in the universe I grew up watching on TV. This is not that. It's not even the universe of the new film. It's not a game that I'm interested in. Don't like my opinion, or my stating my opinion? You can piss off.

Seems to fit the bill on most parts.

I gotta agree with Van on this one. The more I see of this game the less I see Trek. Healer Class ships. Tanks class ships basically rogue class ships. I see a fantasy MMO redressed as Star Trek. Which is why I will be waiting to see on this one and if Biowares Knights of the Old Republic is as good as it's look this game doesn't stand a change no offense. I love Trek but story based MMORPG in the Star Wars Universe hot damn

I've been a life-long Trek fan and gamer, and yet I'm far more excited about The Old Republic.

I hope Star Trek Online is good... I just don't have much faith that it will be.

TOR looks awful: It has the same visual problem ST:O has, namely, the characters look awful standing in the open shooting people.

TOR also has awful animations (the Smuggler videos show him running with his left hand in mid air, waist height for no discernible anatomical reason)

And while the smuggler solves some of the graphical problems with a nice cover system, it itself looks awful, because all you do is shoot blaster fire at people.

And then there is the trooper. Designed for 13 year old morons. One look at him throwing sticky bombs (and watching the enemy try to swat it away like mosquitoes were bothering him) and rifle grenades was so idiotic it turned me completely off of the game.

Okay. I also wonder how many people are going to listen to the voiceovers when nobody reads quest text, especially since most people can read faster than the actors will deliver the lines.

The experience of listening to good voice actors, ala Mass Effect is a lot more fun and immersive to me than reading through text.

The original Knights of the Old Republic is still my favorite game and so I have high hopes.
