George Takei Wants Howard Stern To Mediate William Shatner Feud

Features

By GustavoLeao / 08:05, 19 October 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

The Associated Press posted a new video interview with Star Trek actor George Takei in which he talks about his feud with star William Shatner. Here is a transcript.

"Bill is an energetic guy who likes to be in the spotlight," said Takei. "However, strangely, when any of us - the rest of us invite him to things we are doing; throwing a party or one of us are getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame or anything that we want to celebrate - birthdays - we're there to celebrate, congratulate and enjoy each other - except Bill," he added.

"Bill's never shown up. It's very strange because he enjoys the limelight and yet he doesn't like the limelight to be shared with colleagues from Star Trek."

The actor says he thinks he's found "neutral" ground for them to settle their dispute - Howard Stern's profane Sirius Satellite Radio show, where George is a frequent guest.

"If Bill accepts, and I would applaud his balls if he accepts and joins me in that kind of discussion with Howard mediating as an interlocutor, I said, ‘I'd be happy to do that'."

You can watch the video interview here.

Shatner just believes his own hype. he is the Gene Simmons of Star Trek.
George Takei is a classy guy at every convention and public appearance i have seen him at. Shatner won't shake your hand unless there is a check in it for him. i am a huge fan of TOS but, after janeway/mulgrew, shatner is the most replaceable captain. on throughout TOS, the 70s, and films, he was consistently outclassed on/offscreen by Nimoy, Takei, Kelley and a few others. i love TekWar and most of the Trek novels he has been a part of but he is not the god he is made out to be.

... classy people do not behave like Takei. Losing their temper. Conducting rabid personal attacks. Starting arguments when the other side does not respond, etc.

Shatner has a pretty good on screen career. Facts speak for themselves on this one. You are just making up shit as you go along...

You basically made up the whole post without any substance. What happened? Shatner refused to shake your hand at a convention?

You have had your say regarding Shatner in your books, I think that should be enough.

Maybe George is still angling for that Captain Sulu series?

One Sided Feud | Report this post to moderator
By: Commodore Stickler (Odo's file, contact) @ 08:10:58 on Oct 19, 2009

You know, George needs to get over himself. Shatner never says anything publicly about him and doesn't leave the impression he has anything against anybody. George, on the other hand, seems to be seeking publicity by saying he has a feud going with Shatner.

Is it just me or is this feud a little one-sided?

It's you. When Shatner was on with Billy Bush and was suprised with the Star Trek trailer that he was forced to watch on camera, the first thing he said after it finished was, "I KNEW I saw George Takei in one of those crowd shots." In addition, Shatner has mentioned George on a few occasions on various talk shows and on webisodes with his daughter.

Just because George Takei is the only original cast member who has the cahones to call out Shatner for his bullshit, doesn't mean there is no bullshit. Shatner is notorious for being absent for every gathering of the original cast -- even in 1976 for the dedication of the Space Shuttle! He thinks he is above the rest of them and Takei is just calling him out on it. I would LOVE to see him grilled by Stern.

... and this is how rumours start.

I think I have watched the interview you mean and Shatner was not being mean or attacking Takei. He simply said that he thought he saw Takei in the preview. To me it sounded like a dig at the argument they are supposed to be having, not an attack on Takei as he was not insulting him even indirectly...

... on the other hand, EVERY TIME you read statements from Takei, they are very personal and direct attacks on Shatner. Shatner gets called names. Shatner gets assigned insulting personality traits.

This is not funny and frankly Takei is embarassing himself... I cringe every time I read one of Takei's comments on Shatner... and I feel sorry for Takei making an ass out of himself, and not even seeing it.

I do not know what started it. Or who was at fault in the beginning. I do not know which of the stories are true, which ones are opinions, and which ones are outright lies. However, I can see what ia happening right now. Takei is rabidly attacking Shatner while Shatner is trying to ignore it and at most make fun of the feud and not the person of Takei.

      Cajones? No.

Perhaps they just think that life is too short and none of them really gives a fuck about the egotistical blowhard that is often Shatner.

It's Takei that has this massive chip on his shoulder because he believes that Shatner deliberately stunted his career.

Nichelle Nichols and Jimmy Doohan and Walter Koenig have all called out Shatner.

Shatner was very busy during the 70's simply trying to survive. According to his autobiography, he was scrounging by acting in a traveling theater troupe, living in his own car, paying child support and barely surviving. He probably didn't have the time to get away for the Shuttle media-thingy.

Let's just ask StillKirok about all of this. I'm sure he will know the answers.

His career was still going better than all of the rest of the cast, save for maybe Nimoy. If he had time to appear in horrible tarantula movies or game shows? He could show up to a birthday party, shuttle dedication or Walk-of-Fame star ceremony. Can't make excuses for the guy.. if the rest of the cast showed up to every event, what's his?

Obviously, there are some people that have some sort of vendetta against Shatner. You see some of the irrational hatred on these boards--even in this thread.

But for the most part, Shatner does take the high road in these feuds. It took years and years of Takei taking shots at Shatner before he ever said anything in public about it.

Takei on the other hand, relishes taking shots at Shatner as much as Shatner "likes the spotlight." You would have to have that blind hatred of Shatner to not see this is the case.

Takei never seemed to get that Shatner was the star--it was not an ensemble show. I appreciate Takei's work and think he's a fine actor, but he does instigate in this feud. Even if Takei has a legitimate beef, HE is the one that looks bad with all the public whining about it.

Even Nichols and Koenig have long since let it go.

Personally, I think something like having Howard Stern "mediate" is just dumb.

Raw Nerve, if it is truly unscripted, would make a very good choice if they want to do this publicly. I bet a half hour wouldn't be enough time. Sure, it's Shatner's show, but if it's truly an open dialogue, like the show is supposed to be, then that wouldn't matter. If it isn't, then people would see Takei being railroaded, and it would backfire.

Howard Stern would just make a mockery of it.

But I think that if they are serious, they should just meet in private or have a phone conversation.

From everything I've seen, Shatner has no interest in this feud. He didn't start airing laundry in public, and Takei is the one that has the chip on his shoulder, which is a true shame.
