Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman Give an Update on the Star Trek XII Script Status

Features

By GustavoLeao / 14:24, 17 October 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

IGN posted an exclusive interview with Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman in which they spoke briefly about the status of their script for Star Trek XII. Here are few excerpts from the article.

"We're in the process of re-reading some of our favorite Star Trek novels and looking at the [original TV] show again. We have some basic themes. The honest answer is we don't know yet," Orci revealed. As for the characters, he said, "They're finally in their continuing adventure. They're finally established."

When pressed for a release date, Orci said it looked like the sequel would come out in 2012, "but we're not sure."

Kurtzman added that when it came to turning in the first draft, "Originally we were thinking we'd have to have it by Christmas, but the release changed. Certainly I'd say in the next eight months."

Orci reiterated that in the sequel, "They're established. They're finally a crew. It will resemble more of what you've seen in terms of they're already how they are."

I hope they don't release it in winter 2011 - I'd prefer the summer.

"I would be happy for Star Trek to come along decades later with a new group of minds. I'd love someone to say, 'Besides this one, Gene Roddenberry's was nothing!'" - Gene Roddenberry

"...I think it would be wonderful years from now to see Star Trek come back with an equally talented new cast playing Spock and Kirk and Bones and Scotty and all the rest, as they say tomorrow's things to tomorrow's generations..." - Gene Roddenberry

Paramount has a full-slate of summer films scheduled for 2011 from superheroes to Transformers, and Abrams and Paramount are committed to MI:IV for 2011, which is not scheduled yet. That might be a November 2011 film.

STAR TREK XII for Summer 2012 - if they tentpole it there - makes sense in terms of financing, revenue projections, and marketing planning (especially improving international box office receipts for ST).

Yeah, and I'm not too upset about it. I don't want these guys rushing out a script. These two have too much love for the franchise to allow that to happen. heh

I agree. Lets wait one more year so those guys can polish their script into near perfection and we can get another hell of an awesome Star Trek movie.

Good luck, Mr Orci and Mr Kurtzman.
