BreakingNews.ie posted a brief interview with Star Trek movie actor Simon Pegg (Scotty) and here is an excerpt

Regarding the upcoming Star Trek XII sequel, he said "I know the writers are busy thinking about it. I don't really know anything about the story, or if I'm in a bigger role, but I'd imagine we'll be back this time next year. That's not official, but I reckon it's probably about 18 months away from being in the cinema."

The full interview is here.

USA Today also posted an interview with Pegg and here are excerpts.

Regarding Star Trek and Ice Age, he said "Both of those films are hugely ensemble-driven, and it just so happens" that I'm in them, he says. "If they were my movies, driven entirely by me, then maybe I'd feel a bit full of myself. But I have no illusions about the fact that it's purely coincidence. It's not me. I'm just along for the ride."

Turn the bridge over to Scotty ... | Report this post to moderator

If it was up to me, I'd turn the bridge over to Scotty at some point in the movie like they used to on The Original Series. While Spock and Kirk are off facing some crisis, leave Scotty in command!

THAT is a good idea. And have Scotty kick ass like he always DID when he was in command.

Scotty was the worst written character in the film. He's SOOOOO much more than comic relief, and it would be great to see him BE that brilliant engineer.

Maybe, but it would have been a shame to hire Simon Pegg and not capitalize on his comedic talents. Besides, some of the best laughs of the original series came from Scotty.

That beings said, I think a scene or two with Scotty in command could show his badasss side along with providing some more clever comic releif.

Some of the best laughs may have come from Scotty, but the character wasn't a buffoon. If they need to, recast the part for a more suitable actor, though I don't know if that will be necessary.

A re-casting is completely unnecessary and never going to happen. Pegg didn't even have to audition for the part because J.J. called him and asked him to be in it personally. Case closed.

More of Scotty..? | Report this post to moderator
By: DavidDownUnder (Odo's file, contact) @ 07:19:24 on Jun 30, 2009

I think we'd almost HAVE to see more of Scotty, considering that in ST he was the last of the core characters to be introduced (halfway or so though the movie?) and once you got past his necessary exposition, almost as soon as he was on the 1701 he had basically three scenes:
1. water coolant pipes (no dialogue, just a fun/action piece)
2. bridge with Kirk and Spock (next to no dialogue)
3. the must-have 'Scotty in the engine room' piece

Surely the next movie would thus have to give him a presence from the get-go, more interaction with the rest of the crew and being more part of the team in whatever situation they find themselves in.

But me, I want some more of Karl Urban's totally brilliant McCoy, especially sizing up against Spock and Kirk as part of that famous Trek Trinity.

I'd love to see some more of Scotty the "Miracle Worker."

As far as the rest of my character development wishlist goes (maybe I should start a thread on this):

1)More development of the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic
2)More development of the Spock-Uhura relationship
    3)Development of the Sulu-Chekhov friendship

You can almost be 100% assured Scotty will have more screentime -- not as much as Kirk, Spock and McCoy. But we'll see him throughout the whole movie. Remember, even James Doohan wasn't on screen a whole lot for most of the first six films cause he was always down in engineering.

I agree. I just say make every Scotty moment count. Not the quantity its the quality!

I think Simon did an outstanding Scotty. He was great! Very lovable character, just how Jimmy did it. God rest his soul.

regardless of when the movie is finished, I think they'll release it in the summer again, not around Christmas.

Definately Summer 2011. The specific weekend will be determined by J.J.'s schedule (assuming he directs) and what films are coming out that summer also -- including Batman 3 if they follow the current pace. Keep in mind too, if J.J. doesn't direct he'll almost certainly produce; giving the sequel some proper guidance at the very least.
