Orci and Kurtzman Say Studio Wants Star Trek XII to Come Out as Soon as Possible

Collider posted a video interview with Star Trek and Transformers 2 writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and here are more excerpts from a transcript courtesy of TrekToday.

"We're trying to do exactly what we did on the first one," said Orci, "and really find it from a place of passion and love and fun. Another thing we are doing is reading what all the fans are saying online," he said. "We are kind of checking out their reactions."

"If J.J. [Abrams] directs the movie, then it'll happen on a certain time period," said Kurtzman. "If it's somebody else it'll happen on a different time period. So right now everyone is trying to figure that out. We'd love to have a script by Christmas but a lot of that is going to be dependent upon a lot of factors...If we can make it by Christmas, great. And if we feel like, you know what, we just need more time, then we'll need to take more time. Because I think we all feel that we, this is a very precious baby to us, Star Trek, and we don't want to drop it."

About the possibility of J.J. Abrams returning to direct Star Trek XII. Kurtzman said "I think the only pressure that he [Abrams] is feeling and that we're all feeling is that the studio would like the movie to come out as soon as possible. So the question just becomes...do you want to do that or not, and he's right as a director to wait until he feels that we either have broken the right idea or he sees the script."

Regarding the potential villain for Star Trek XII. Orci said "Two things. One is, we have had questions about the debate sort of between the exploration sci-fi plot where the unknown and nature itself is somehow an adversary, or the villain model. So that's an active discussion we're having right now."

The video interview is here.

This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. They may pay attention to what the fans are posting (which is great), I just don't think they in any way feel held hostage by us either. Star Trek fans aren't necessarily enough to make or break a box office because any smart Paramount employee knows that we are mostly just talk -- we'll go see any Star Trek film no matter what our opinion of it is going into it. [See: Star Trek: Nemesis] Hell, if the next film had Patrick Stewart standing on the bridge by himself and reading the ingredients off condiment bottles in his refrigerator for 109 minutes, half the people on this board would pay to see that!
