Star Trek director J.J. Abrams sent an email to AICN editor Harry Knowles regarding the rumors that actor Jack Black will play the role of Harry Mudd (played by the late Roger C. Carmel in the TOS episodes "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd") in the upcoming Star Trek XII sequel. Here are excerpts of his email :

"Yes, talking to Jack Black about doing something -- but not Mudd." Abrams wrote

"Bryan, Damon, Alex and Bob and I have not had MEETING ONE about a sequel."

"Brief, casual, blue-sky conversations, of course. But "okay, what's next for The Crew?" Not a meeting. So any character decisions, let alone actor discussions, feel like a ways away."

The full report can be found at AICN.

I'd rather have Uhura mud wrestling an Orion chick.

It cant be Jack Black because we all know it'll be Will Ferrell.

And wouldn't THAT make certain aspects of fandom combust!

What's the point of talking about this now, anyway? The ink has barely dried on the prints of Trek XI being shown in theatres. Are they planning to move up XII to 2010 or something???

You must not have read J.J.'s comments above. I will repeat them for you now:

"Bryan, Damon, Alex and Bob and I have not had MEETING ONE about a sequel. Brief, casual, blue-sky conversations, of course. But 'okay, what's next for The Crew?' Not a meeting. So any character decisions, let alone actor discussions, feel like a ways away."

The film is still slated to be released in 2011 and their dialogue above makes it clear that nothing more than casual quips have been exchanged so far.

with Shatner as the Emperor, no Shatner.

And no, I don't think there's a way to do a scene without taling away from the film.

A mirror universe story is tailor-made for an episode or two of a television series but would be silly, campy and a little contrived for a motion picture. Paramount did not spend all this time and money rebuilding a franchise, only to show the cast battling the evil, goatee-wearing versions of themselves in the sequel. C'mon..

I agree, as does J.J. and probably Shatner himself.

I didn't say it was a great idea, I said it was the only way Shatner was going to work. And yes, there are some bits about the idea that amuse me.

They haven't even begun to explore the new universe yet. Seems stupid to try running to ANOTHER alternate universe for the next film.

Why? They could do a new universe for each of those films. Basically reboot the thing each time.

(In case it isn't clear: I'm only joking.)

    I'm going to say :
    NO SHATNER
    NO NIMOY
    NO MUDD
    NO KHAN.

There are potentially a whole new universe of aliens and villians out there. With the ability to portray them as more than "forehead of the week".
    Why limit yourself?
    Cheers.

Shame on you Gustavo... SHAME! You honestly want to dig up Shatner and Nimoy again (who will be 79 years old when the sequel is filmed) for the sequel? At least Khan, Mudd or whoever else would be younger actors and make sense. Remember now, Khan and his supermen are still in cryogenic freeze on the Botany Bay and were uneffected by Nero's timeline altering. Let's please let these old actors be so the new crew can have their own film. Just look how First Contact did when the TNG crew was allowed to shed their TOS-costar baggage.

Well, what can I say ? I loved Mr Nimoy acting so much in the new movie, really moved me, and I am a BIG Shatner fan (heck, I even have the TekWar DVD box set) that would be a blast (at least for me) to see them together again in Trek 12.

What can I say ? SHAME ON ME ! SHAME ON ME !!! LOL

Ditto. It can be done as a small scene or cameo without taking away from the movie.

But what incarnation of Kirk would Shatner play? Would it be a flashback of Kirk Prime, or an older new-timeline Kirk somehow brought back to timeframe of the next movie? If so, they wouldn't share any common memories, except for their meeting on Delta Vega. Unless Spock Prime finds the Nexus and somehow telepathically pulls Kirk Prime's "echo" out of it. After all, the Nexus does not exist in space and time the way we do. Of course, I'm sure I'll get a lot of negative comments for this suggestion. But remember, "this is only a web page."

Then why do it at all? It's the same exact reason why Shatner said "no" to the contrived hologram cameo he was offered by Abrams for XI. Are you really so deprived of Shatner (who is on the border of being overexposed anyway) that you're thinking this would ever happen?

It is a webpage and I am being civil. :) I just think that this straw grasping for something that is not going to happen is a little sad, that's all. I was hoping with XI in the bag we would never have to hear Shatner's name again, but alas.. we could only be so lucky..

I did on Sunday the 10th of May, I think, so if it predates that anywhere fine. Otherwise somebody plucked my suggestion and turned it to rumor.

I can't believe they're TALKING to Jack Black about Trek 12 even if it's NOT Mudd. And, yes, I do see that that leaves open the possibility of Cyrano Jones who is, essesntially, the same character.

I think Black is a BIIIIIT to high-profile and recognizeable. I hope it ends up not working out. I also hope Abrams and company steer clear of the temptation to take the tactic of reimagining Star Trek's greatest hits. It's SO lazy. Just think of something NEW!

Good point. Good PR for a JJ project too. All these Trekkies trying to figure out what role he's in when it's a totally unrelated project...draws some added attention.

I think Jack would make a FANTSTIC Harry Mudd. I would see the sequal if he is in it and I am NOT a fan of the last one. But I can also see him as Cyrano Jones. Very few actors have the chops to play either part- he does.
