According to TrekMovie.com, studio insiders revealed that Academy Award winning sound designer Ben Burtt, best known for his work on the Star Wars movies, has joined the production of J.J. Abrams new Star Trek movie.

Burtt worked on all six Star Wars and also the Indiana Jones films as a sound designer, E.T., and last year’s Pixar hit Wall-E. Burtt is working with Mark Stoeckinger who was the sound editor for Abrams' Mission: Impossible: III. According to TrekMovie source, they needed all the help they could get for the sheer number of new sounds that had to be created for this new Star Trek. According to the site Burtt is a huge Trek fan and was thrilled to get a chance to be involved.

More info on this and the movie post-production can be found at TrekMovie.

Regardless of whether your are Star Wars fans or not - Ben Burtt is probably one of the best, if not the best, sound designer in the business. His ability to create new and unique sounds from items that some have lying around their houses never ceases to amaze me. Plus he has an ear for what sounds right and what doesn't...I really don't think anyone can argue that the sound effects in all six of the Star Wars movies was nothing less than outstanding. Add to that his work on WALL•E and you've got a certified sound genius working on the next Star Trek movie!

Ben Burtt is a master, and his involvement in ANY film is a great asset. This is great news for the Star Trek film from a sound effects standpoint--the man is simply brilliant.

I hope for something like those sonic charges in Star Wars Episode II! Remember Obivan's running from Jango Fett through that asteroid belt? Those sonic charges had the most incredible sound FX EVER!!! Explosion - silence - wooosh...Pure genius!

A sound designer creates sounds that don't exist in real life. You can't record the sound a lightsabre makes because it doesn't exist. That's where Burtt comes in.

What Burtt did so well with the "Star Wars" saga was create so many interesting alien sounds out of ordinary and mundane objects. Phaser blasts from tapping on exterior phone cable wires with a wrench, using an electric razor in a mixing bowl to create the Trade Federation droid vessels, and so forth. If he could do such wonderful sounds for "Star Wars", I for one cannot wait to hear what he has in store for the new "Star Trek" film!

If I hear one screaming Gungan at any point during this film, I will join the Shatnerbaters with their protest signs in the parking lot.

    All three of them?

Star Wars sound in a Star Trek film? Great.. now each member of the principle cast will say "I have a bad feeling about this..." at least twice during the film.

1. Well, I guess if it had come out on Dec. 25, the film would have been a bit rushed.

2. With Burtt on board we are guaranteed that the WILHELM SCREAM will be in this TREK film! I'm actually excited about that ... can't wait to find it.
