According to TrekMovie.com, studio insiders revealed that Academy Award winning sound designer Ben Burtt, best known for his work on the Star Wars movies, has joined the production of J.J. Abrams new Star Trek movie.

Burtt worked on all six Star Wars and also the Indiana Jones films as a sound designer, E.T., and last year’s Pixar hit Wall-E. Burtt is working with Mark Stoeckinger who was the sound editor for Abrams' Mission: Impossible: III. According to TrekMovie source, they needed all the help they could get for the sheer number of new sounds that had to be created for this new Star Trek. According to the site Burtt is a huge Trek fan and was thrilled to get a chance to be involved.

More info on this and the movie post-production can be found at TrekMovie.

What Burtt did so well with the "Star Wars" saga was create so many interesting alien sounds out of ordinary and mundane objects. Phaser blasts from tapping on exterior phone cable wires with a wrench, using an electric razor in a mixing bowl to create the Trade Federation droid vessels, and so forth. If he could do such wonderful sounds for "Star Wars", I for one cannot wait to hear what he has in store for the new "Star Trek" film!
