MMOZONE posted new images of the Star Trek Online MMORPG game including new shotos of the Federation starship that will be seen a lot in the game: the NX-91001, descended from the Sovereign Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-E commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the 24th Century.

Seems fine to me... | Report this post to moderator

Sure, you could argue that they didn't get too creative with a 25th Century starship. But on the other hand, from their perspective they were probably worried if they went for something daring, Trekkies would start screaming, "That doesn't look like Star Trek at all!"

You know that would happen even if they nailed it out of the ballpark, and unlike the new movie, this game is pretty much relying on core fanbase support if it's going to succeed.

Since on TNG we still saw Excelsior type ships roaming around the galaxy, this new ship doesn't seem out of place at all.

I agree with the point you're making, with one minor exception - those Excelsior and Miranda-class ships were never portrayed as state-of-the-art experimentals.

i wonder if the ships are customizable...I'm guessing you build your own as you play.piece by piece..

this might explain the funky way these ships look

I hope there still are 24th cent ships available to play

...not being a particular departure from the E.

I actually think that's a good thing. It's an iterative design.

That might not mean much for entertainment purposes, but it's realistic and it beats making your own and flubbing it.

It looks like a Sovereign with some extra stuff on the back of the saucer and the NX-class roll bar between the nacelles. Not exactly creative.

      No.

You'd think if somebody said, "You get to create a 25th century version of the flagship of the Federation." you'd really want to try to push the envelope at least a little.

Maybe they were afraid of making it all a bit too unfamiliar? I dunno, but it just doesn't work for me.

Unless, as said above, you can kinda make your own version.

It does indeed. I am not sure if I like the Enterprise-J from ENT. I found it way too thin and wafery. Wafery? Oh well, I am tired and have been up too late. Anyway, it was not substantive. I like bulk....like TOS or Enterprise E

It sort of reminds me of Admiral Riker's refitted Enterprise D from All Good Things, except done with a Sovvy. Just give it a third nacelle and a super-blasto-whammo gun thingy and you're set.

That idea would make sense - if the story was that this was a Sovereign dragged out of mothballs and refitted as the re-birth of multi-purpose ships of the line. As an "all new" design it falls flatter than 2D.
