TrekMovie.com just posted the first images of toys for the new Star Trek movie. The "Barbie" line from Mattel Toys includes 12" versions of James T. Kirk, Spock, and Uhura, featuring excellent likenesses of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, to be available in April 2009, and should retail for about $45 each, according to TrekMovie.

You can see the full images of the "Barbie" figures of Kirk, Spock and Uhura, plus info on the toys, at TrekMovie.

What's with Uhura becoming the 'third star' over McCoy?

They're Barbies. You pretty much have to have at least one female in the bunch. And guess what...it sure as hell ain't McCoy.

Why produce a Barbie figure of a McCoy that looks almost exactly like the Kirk and Spock dolls? Better to go with contrasts than making the nerdy "character heirarchy" a priority.

Might not be news to some but... notice the phasers. Kinda looks to me like a cross from ST2 and ST5. I am pleased to see the "basic" design is still being used.

These are actual, name-brand Barbies? Have we ever seen that for Star Trek before?

Further down in the link it actually shows the Ken/Barbie Star Trek figures in their original packaging as well.

Not trying to jump the gun here and cry doom without seeing the movie or hearing more, but again stuff like this has me skeptical that they are down playing McCoy's significance. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy should be the Trinity of Trek. And while I definitely see the need for a female Barbie doll and Uhura has to be it, again we get no McCoy.

So in the first "split screen" image we get Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and Nero with McCoy being in the second set that came out later. In the new crew lineup poster the front three are Kirk with Spock and Uhura to his immediate sides. And in a lot of the "behind the scenes" interview pictures we see on this site we see JJ, Chris, Zach, and Zoe together with no Karl.

Again I'm not trying to call doom, blasphamy, or anything else like. I have every intent of seeing this movie as soon as it comes out and I have high hopes for it. I'm not going to be a continuity hound because Kirk shouldn't know how to drive a stick shift or the Enterprise shouldn't be built in Iowa. The explained intent of the movie though is to get back to the Trek roots and really find out what makes these characters tick and what brought them together. Seeing the above mentioned stuff makes me wonder if the importance of the McCoy character was lost somewhere, which seems to be against the core of Trek in my opinion. I'm all for bumping Uhura's relevance and really making a strong female character, I'm sure Gene would have liked that as well (Number One), but not at the expense of McCoy and the established Trek Trinity.

You may very well be right, but I still feel safe believing that it's just part of the marketing campaign. Uhura's presence on the main poster gives it a much-needed dose of sexiness. And you can't have a bunch of Ken dolls without a prominent Barbie.

If I remember correctly, Karl Urban is from New Zealand. That may explain why he is not in as many publicity shots together with the other stars from the movie. He's just several thousand miles away.
I'm pretty sure they will get him for the main promo tour once we get closer to the release.

Obviously, I could be wrong (Won't know until May), but I think you're reading too much into it. It's a couple of dolls and a poster.

It's not so much the Barbie doll piece of it I'm worried about. As has been mentioned it is Barbie so there must be a female, hence Uhura, and Kirk would be the best Ken analogy and what is Trek without Spock. So for this one piece I can understand the absence of McCoy. If this were the only case of McCoy absence/less prominence I wouldn't have a concern. My concern comes when adding up this, with posters, with interview schedules, with some of the things said in interviews. That's where the concern comes that the Trek Trinity of Kirk, Spock, McCoy may now be updated to Kirk, Spock, Uhura. Again I'll reserve final judgement until I see it, and I will see it, but this is why I'm skeptically optimistic instead of purely optimistic.

"Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a Barbie doll!"

But seriously, I was thinking the same thing when Abrams and the writers kept talking about Kirk and Spock without a mention of the good Doctor McCoy. The Kirk - Spock - McCoy dynamic was a critical part of TOS. If it is overlooked in the new movie something important to Star Trek will be lost.
