By GustavoLeao / 17:53, 27 December 2008 / General Star Trek

TrekWeb talks to Rob Caves, producer of the post-Nemesis fan production series Star Trek The Helena Chronicles, Star Trek Odyssey and Star Trek Federation One and head of Hidden Frontier Productions, about his plans for Star Trek fan films in 2009.

1- Rob, how do you rate 2008 for the fan film communitiny and specially Hidden Frontier Productions, with new productions such the movie Operation Beta Shield and the first episode of Federation One ?

2008 was a lot of fun, with a LOT going on!  We worked with old friends, and met new ones with Operation Beta Shield and Federation One.  We started up something new with Federation One that will hopefully become very successful and long-lived in its new audio format.

2- What fan film fans can expect in 2009 ? What can you reveal about your new and upcoming projects ?

We announced Henglaar M.D. (House meets Star Trek) at the end of 2008 and that should be a fun one to watch develop with John Whiting in a lead role.

We're about to release Federation One's season finale "Institutions", which is the last episode we filmed before it goes into an audio format in season 2.  There is an exciting crossover planned to kickoff it's second season with a crossover with the Starfleet Renegades audio drama.  That should be out sometime in the first quarter of 2009.

3- What about the second seasons of the fan series Helena Chronicles and Odyssey ? What are your plans for these two productions ?

Helena Chronicles shocked people with the season finale and there are more twists and turns in season 2, not to mention a high-octane season premiere that will be released in February.

Odyssey kicks off season 2 with filming in January for a release in March.  We'll get to learn more about Odyssey's new passenger and some interesting backstory on a couple of the main characters this time around.

4- Finally, Rob, what are your message for the fans who have enjoyed your fan films for almost a decade and are looking foward for the continuation of the Hidden Frontier saga in 2009 ?

Thank you for giving us a chance, when we were a growing, and learning.  We appreciate the patience, and the willingness to come back and check us out when we started putting out more quality work.  We hope we don't let you down, and we hope you'll continue to follow us as we embark on new directions!  I know our offering doesn't appeal to everyone, but we hope we can still put out a decent story when all is said and done and entertain.

What I found interesting is that those Hidden Frontier fan films are keeping the post-Nemesis TNG era alive, while others fan films like James Cawley's Phase II focus on the TOS era; And I am a big fan of the 24th Century TNG era. The OPERATION BETA SHIELD movie is in many ways a sequel to Nemesis, since it focus on Romulan politics and even Section 31 is involved.
