Sad news of her passing ... | Report this post to moderator

I read news of her passing today, Dec. 18. Bless you, Mrs. Roddenberry, and thank you.

I'm so glad you got to be part Star Trek's new era in this film.

Speaking of Federation computer voices, when TNG started, weren't all the ships and stations supposed to each possess a computer with a different voice? In 11001001 (or whatever it was called!) the Federation space station had a male computer voice.

Cool, a character from TOS who isn't being recast, the ship's computer. I disagree, though, with the poster below who wants her to do the... fake... robot...voice... from... sixties... does... not... compute... Will... Robinson. Her TNG era voice is fine, maybe with a little post-production electonic quality to it. Not too muchy, though. If you can't recognize her voice, there would be no point.

So Majel gets to keep her record. Being credited in all ST series and movies.

No you wouldn't have, don't lie. In fact the statement you made before this, "I never even thought about this." means that it never crossed your mind and you wouldn't haev even blinked when you heard a different voice. So dramatic for just a little bit of attention on a forum...

I hope it's not the same voice as post-TNG. The one from TOS was highly mechanical and had little female inflection --- except for that one ep. when the computer was "attracted" to Kirk.

I hope her voice is altered to be similar to the TOS version, and NOT the TNG one.

Surely you jest. Have you seen the trailer for the movie? It's updated, not retro. People will laugh in derision if this movie portrays computers speaking with that "Wor-king...wor-king...Error! Error! Does...not...compute!" style of yesteryear. That's the kind of thing Trek needs to get away from!

I am cheered to hear Majel will be voicing the computer again though. That's definitely a tradition that deserves to continue.

Totally agree. The computer voice is one of the most obviously dated elements from TOS, and doing anything remotely like that would be utterly ludicrous.

Of course the Shatnerites will use this as another excuse to get up in arms, but it makes sense for them to use Majel for the computer voice and it's fitting that Gene's wife would be involved in the relaunch. Question will be whether they'll have her do the same robotic voice as in TOS or the more humanlike voice she used for the computers in TNG and later.

It's always you anti-Shatner, anti-TOS board trollers that start this bullshit. Not a single TOS fan has complained about Majel providing the computer voice.

is that it'll be more TNGish since this ship seems more modern than the original.

I bet she uses a TNG voice. The "werking!" voice is a bit antiquated.

Yeah, I have to admit...Majel's voice is more important that we all think about.

The nice thing is that they have her saying close to EVERYTHING on there, so they could use it again in new episodes. :)

Wasn't Majel's voice used in most of the TOS computer-voice eps? I think I read online that her voice was used then as well. Nice tie-in, IMO. I think the clicking sounds of the TOS computers and the monotone voice is probably obsolete so I would agree the TNG version might be more relevant.

I really dont know if she was the computer voice in TOS, OV. I did a bit of research on this and found nothing. So I just posted the spin-offs and TNG movies in the article. But feel free to correct me, if I was wrong.

I think of all the big and small screen incarnations the only one she was never involved with was TAS. I met her back in 96 as part of a big Trek event and the neat thing is I got a picture of her autoged but the neat thing is rather then one big picture it had one medium sized one and around it had some mini pictures of other things she has portrayed/done in the Trek universe.

Sure she was--she voiced Chapel, M'ress (sometimes), and any female guest characters Nichelle Nichols was doing that week, as well as the ship's computer. She was a very integral part of the animated series.

Also the computer voice in all 4 TNG movies. She has been credited for ALL the 5 series. TOS (As chapel and as comp voice); TNG / DS9 (As Troi and as comp voice) TAS (Various voice characters); VOY / ENT (As comp voice).

She has been an integral part of the franchise, as integral as the word Star Trek itself.

The only actor who comes this close to her is Jonathan Frakes who has been featured in every ST venture after TNG. TNG / VOY / ENT / TNG movies (As Riker); DS9 (As Tom Riker).
