IGN TV posted a extensive interview with William Shatner in which he talks about his new talk show Raw Nerve, which premieres tomorrow. Shatner also talked a bit about J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. Here are excerpts.

IGN : Lastly, I'd like to ask you if you'd gotten a chance to see any of the 20 minutes of footage from the new Star Trek movie that's been circulating around?

Shatner: No, I've seen nothing. Is it good?

IGN: It looks pretty good actually. We have these iconic screen characters like James Bond and James Kirk, but, unlike Bond, this is the first time that Kirk is being rebooted. How do you feel having Kirk played by another actor? Have you seen any of Chris Pine's work?

Shatner: No, I haven't. Have you?

IGN: Yes, I saw him play a sort of a psycho hillbilly.

Shatner: Well then, that sounds right for Kirk.

IGN: How do you feel about the character living on in the form of another actor?

Shatner: Well, there's nothing I can do about it. But I hear that it's going to be a fun movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

The full interview is here.

UPDATE : UGO also posted a new interview with Shatner and here is an excerpt.

UGO: And as Abrams did this road show, he had a little bit of a prepared statement and his talking points.  The type of thing you don't see of Shatner's Raw Nerve.

WS:
Yes.

UGO
: And the jokey way he decided to break the ice was, ‘I never was a fan of Star Trek.' It's the first thing out of his mouth.

WS:
Uh oh.

UGO:
How do you react, when you hear that?

WS:
Well, he lies through his teeth. Because he was a "big fan of Star Trek." So, JJ Abrams is trying to cast himself as a nouveau entre into the Star Trek universe. But I know him to be an old admirer of the show.

UGO: Well, he's got to clear himself of the perceived stain.  There are some people who think Star Trek is just for the mouth-breathing nerd.  It's a marketing ploy that either he devised or someone who devised for him and told him to say and it is what he's running with it.

WS:
Nobody tells JJ Abrams what to say, I can tell you that much.  He's got to broaden the base of the audience. And, I'm really being facetious when I refer to him as a long-time admirer. But he's doing the best he can. You and I both recognize his trying to broaden the base of the audience, so that people will come to see it as an adventure.

UGO:
Why do you think there is a little bit of a stigma to Star Trek?

WS:
I think because the audience that has remained there has been so passionate in the affection for the show, that people who don't know why they're so passionate think of them in negative terms. And so if you're known to like Star Trek, you're linked with this group of people who wear costumes.

I saw footage of a fan's reaction as he saw the trailer for the first time.

I'd like to see that done with Shatner and get his immediate take on what he saw. I'm betting it would get a "Wow" out of him.

I would have thought that J J would have made sure that Shatner would have been one of the first to have seen what was available.

(a) None of the original cast save for maybe Nimoy has seen that 20 minutes of footage.

(b) If Shatner wanted to see footage, he could have seen 'Quantam of Solace' or hopped online and watched the trailer in between promoting himself on his own website.

Shatner hasn't seen anything? | Report this post to moderator
By: sean_skroht (Odo's file, contact) @ 18:22:20 on Dec 01, 2008

I find it a bit odd that the actor that originally pioneered the famous character of James T Kirk, and who helped shaped Star Trek into what it was, has been left out of the loop and has not seen a single frame of footage. I would have thought that J J would have made sure that Shatner would have been one of the first to have seen what was available.

Either Shatner is not interested at all in seeing anything from this movie, or maybe the recent comments bandied back and forth between him and J J over the net may have caused bad blood. Or maybe he just simply isn't entitled to be privy to the development of this film. Who knows! But for whatever the reason I still think it's odd.

Hey Gustavo, I think the title of the post is a bit misleading. Of course, I am razzing you mostly ;)

He (being Shatner) only says Pine sounds right based on a half-wacked remark the interviewer makes. He also "praises" the movie for the same reason. I always love how he starts his comment about "There's nothing I can do about it..."

Well, as far as Kirk being dead, he had alot to do about it. I think he wanted to shed his Kirk personae back when Generations was being made. Now that he is being left out, I think he has second thoughts (among other reasons perhaps). He should have insisted that Kirk not die, or the worst case, refuse to be in Gen if the writers would not change the script. What's done is done and it's time to move on. Shatner in or not in the new movie will not make or break it, IMHO.

Well, I see your point, OV. I changed the headline somewhat, so I hope you liked it better now. I was really busy today, so I had very little time to update TrekWeb, so I guess I just posted the first thing that came in my head regarding the headlines. Thanks for the feedback. Best regards,

    Gustavo

Oh, no, you're great, OV ! You were quite right about the headline, but the thing is I was too tired last night when I posted it. Dont worry, I really appreciate your comments and any feedback from our readers as well. Keep sending your comments about my articles and TrekWeb, please, and thank you so much.
