PC Gaming posted a new interview with Craig Zinkievich, Executive Producer, Cryptic Studios about the pending Star Trek Online MMOPG. Here are excerpts.

What is the story for the game and is it opened ended or story-based gameplay?

Star Trek Online
begins in 2409, which is about 30 years after the events in Star Trek Nemesis. In that time, technology has advanced, the Klingon Empire and the Federation are no longer allies and the universe is a much more volatile place.

We will be revealing the story of what has happened in the Star Trek universe leading up to 2409 in a series of updates on our web site. So check out www.startrekonline.com to learn more.

As far as the gameplay goes, there is both story-based episodic content within the universe and open-ended exploration content.

Will anyone from the series of films show up and provide voices?

In 2409, most of the major characters have retired or moved on. We're exploring ways to involve some of the actors from the films and series in the game, but they might not be playing "their" characters.

How do players figure into ship departments, and how is the ship captained? Will players man science and medical stations and work as a team? Will NPCs come into play, or will command decisions be assigned to players?

You are the captain of your ship. You have customizable bridge crew pets to help you, and you can increase the skills of those crew members during play. But as far as the direct flying and commanding of your ship goes, it's in your hands.

Being in command doesn't limit your role. You can choose from a variety of careers such as engineering, tactical, medical, science, etc. Your career path will affect your skills and how you command your crew. Think about characters like Jean-Luc Picard, Beverly Crusher, Worf and Kathryn Janeway. Picard was an archeologist and diplomat, Crusher was a doctor, Worf was a security and tactical officer, and Janeway was a scientist. They all became ship captains, but what they had done before influenced their command style.

What sort of graphics engine is the game using?

We are using Cryptic's proprietary game engine and technology. The engine has done a great job of rendering awesome customizable ground-based gameplay in the past, and the space gameplay we're making with it now is pretty awesome too.

Fanboy wet dream anyone??? | Report this post to moderator

I want to be excited for this game. I really do. But they changed it from you getting to work your way up through the ranks to being a new Captain and having "pets" for the crew. I really want to have my buddies man the other positions and such. Make it more fun. Also make it so there aren't as many starships in space at once.

Anyways, I try to get motivated for it, and then I read this fanboy wet dream of an "update" to tell us what has been going on since the end of Nemesis. It reads like fan fiction. They cram as many names into it as they can to make it relevant and forgot about the quality. Its just terrible, terrible.

I too was very disappointed to find that my friends and I cant man our own starship. People from all corners of the planet coming together on the bridge of a starship to face the unknown... Isn't that what Trek is all about?

I'm also extremely disappointed that the creators of this game would choose to focus on an era of Star Trek that few people care about anymore. Simply looking at ratings and box office numbers, the further away from the Kirk and Spock era the series went, the less interesting it got. Probably the most interesting non-K/S era was TNG, but instead the creators of this game decide to give us exactly what you described: a fanboy's fan-fiction version of Star Trek.

I was at first very interested in Star Trek Online, especially after seeing the first images of the inside of the Galaxy Class ship. However, this version has me completely UNINTERESTED in investing either my money or my time.

I liked their post-Nemesis 25th Century storyline. I found this exciting. Is this a bit fan boy-ish? Peharps, but I found it interesting stuff, this game should be a major hit with a lot of fans like me who enjoy the TNG era. Just my two cents.

If you actually read the Storyline all of the information so far is a summary of the Star Trek Titan series and the DS9 relaunch series. Everything written is in Star Trek Cannon as all of the books released after since the cancellation of Voyager have kept thing organized and consistent

Star Trek Online has the potential to blow WoW out of the water, and surpass the quality of every MMORPG out there.

It really is looking like a awesome game in itself, in addition to appealing to Trek fans.

"What if my guinea pig can't reach the buttons?"

    Voice activation, silly.
