Nov 23Chuck returns to NBC with a special two-hour show on Sunday, Jan 10, 2010, before returning to its regular time slot, Mondays at 8pm on the following night. It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

I was thinking the same thing - I dont think Pine and Quinto will replace Shatner and Nimoy and the original actors on the covers of novels or even in the comic books. It still will be the original Star Trek timeline look in those publications.

Interesting point, but I, for one, am not surprised at all by the decision...I'd be more suprised by the reverse. As President-Elect Obama has reminded us, "there can be only one president at a time." The sentiment is also valid vis-a-vis the TOS cast(s), I think.

The figurative "transition of power/changing of the guard" betweeen casts can really only happen after the new cast is "sworn in" by popular consensus (translation: box-office bucks).

Even if the movie makes a ton of money, I share the thoughts of one poster below who believes Pocket Books won't really alter their current book lines for this. After all, the younger demographic Abrams is going for aren't the people who read the books, right? I imagine Pocket books aims to target readers already faithful to the Star Trek brand, who identify the original character likenesses/actors with this brand. Zachary Quinto may indeed be great as the new Spock, but he's not "my" Spock, and the original torch-bearer is still living! I could see Pocket Books changing their tune a few years down the line when the original actors aren't around anymore and Trek has been completely rebooted in the cultural consciousness--in other words, when people identify Kirk more with Pine than the Shat.

I could see them spinning off an entirely new set of books (similar to the "Expanded Universe" concept posted below, or Marvel's Ultimate Universe) and just treating each line as a separate take on the same francise, with one catering to newer fans. I've no trouble with multiple continuities, etc. and actually think it's good for keeping a property fresh.

I will say that, as a long-time fan (I began my Trek journey in '82 at age 6!) I find the prospect of revamping covers to reflect cast changes NOW to be too market-driven and even a bit disgusting on a human level. As one of my favorite sayings goes, "Hold your horses, folks." She ain't even out of the gate yet. Let's have the new cast walk around in the shoes of our favorite characters for a bit, THEN give them the reins.
