STAR TREK DESTINY MERE MORTALS

Review by Jeff Ayers

If you want to avoid spoilers and just see my rating, then:

10 out of 10

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, Captain Hernandez of the Columbia and several of her crew begin to face the harsh reality that they are never going to leave Erigol. Her crew plots escape while Hernandez starts to accept her new prison, making her crewmates unhappy campers. Then the Titan arrives, and several of them are forced to stay as well, including a pregnant Deanna. On board the Titan, a worried Captain Riker must make a horrible choice. An overworked President of the Federation must ally the worlds to create a unified front against the impending terrifying threat from the Borg. Unfortunately, some of the leaders from other Federation planets would rather watch Earth collapse to save their own worlds from the onslaught.

David Mack succeeds in not only creating another rip-roaring action stunner, but also avoiding “middle book syndrome,” when the second book is nothing more than filler to get the reader to the conclusion. Never once while reading this did I feel that way. With two down and one to go, this story lives up to the hype so far.

And this is why the next TV show should be post DS9/Nemesis.

The Destiny trilogy was the best thing done with the Star Trek franchise in 2008. Congratulations to author David Mack, editor Marco Palmieri and everyone at Pocket Books for delivering one of the best Star Trek tales ever in the history of the franchise. Highly recommended reading.

Gustavo
