Sci Fi Wire posted a new interview with director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), in which he talks more about the new Star Trek movie, since he was given an early screening of an early cut of J.J. Abrams movie, as reported before. Here are excerpts of the article

Smith admitted to preferring the films over the original series, and he said the new reboot movie is a highlight of the film series.

"I can watch the movies again and again and again," Smith said. "The TV is kind of sacrosanct for a lot of people, but I don't enjoy it as much as I enjoy the movies. So this one I enjoyed probably the most since I've enjoyed, like, Wrath of Khan."

He lauded the performances of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto  and the rest of the prequel's cast and also praised the idea of rebooting the franchise. "I'm all for a reboot, because it just keeps it potentially alive longer," he said.

The full interview is here.

This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. In Smith's defense, he didn't really compare the movie to TWOK, he just said he enjoyed it the most since TWOK.

--------

"The idea of doing an impression of William Shatner… it would have no shot at succeeding. The character is Jim Kirk, not William Shatner." - Chris Pine

I don't think "reboot" is a bad thing | Report this post to moderator

I think "refresh" is more along of what they're trying to say.

Or like rebooting your PC to fully integrate upgrades and fixes. It's still your computer, still familiar, but now it has some new features and looks a little different. Maybe even a little more fun.

Chill out till May, folks. It's just a movie.

Or... it's the same house your grandfather built 42 years ago, but with a new paint job, new in-house wiring, and you get all the HD channels. Also, there's a toilet downstairs now.

    I like your analogy better.

Another TWOK reference, big deal! | Report this post to moderator
By: Terminal Frost (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:17:52 on Oct 26, 2008

Everyone knows that Smith is a huge Star Wars fans. He admits to not being that big a Trek fan. For him to say it is a reboot means that someone is again lying about the film. They say it is a reboot then they say it is not. They say Shatner was trying to be worked in then they say they had not intention. So basically what the hell is the truth? Is it that hard to tell everyone the truth?

All this praise from the insiders about the film doesn't mean anything. Do people really think that Smith was going to trash the film? Do people really think that the Paramount executives that funded the largest Trek budget in history of $150 million dollars were going to say "oh my its sucks ass?" Give me a break.

What we really need here to settle all the lies is a bunch of fans to see the film and get their opinion. Having Smith tell me it is like TWOK means nothing. It doesn't encourage or discourage my decision about the film.

More Hype ever day | Report this post to moderator
By: jimbtnp (Odo's file, contact) @ 09:11:14 on Oct 26, 2008

If JJ and company spent all this Hype energy on creative story telling - we may have a good movie

but constantly self (or close to self) proclaiming how great your own movie will be is getting old

reboot nota reboot, no shat, we tried shat,

How about getting a real scifi writer involved - forget shoehorning into existing cannon by simply avoiding it and doing something new - like they did every week on TOS

this smell more like style over substance and the hype machine smells like TDK where the viewing public was programmed to like the movie before they saw it

You're a f*cking idiot. Interviewers ask him questions, he praises his film and it gets posted here. You think he has some sort of agenda of overpraise or something? I mean, seriously... it scares me that people like you actually vote.

The guy gives one of the more candid interviews around, and you guys are picking apart his choice of words and vocabulary? TYPICAL.

Calm down, he is not being paid a cent for this. He is one of J.J.'s buddies and got to screen the film early -- don't be bitter because you can't say the same.

Hmmm ... so this IS a reboot | Report this post to moderator
By: sb2004 (Odo's file, contact) @ 06:20:56 on Oct 26, 2008

So despite Abrams and the writers' claims that this is an in-canon prequel, we now have Kevin Smith saying it's a reboot. That is NOT the same thing. If it's a reboot, then as far as I'm concerned all cards are on the table in terms of style and everything else, and more power to them. That's the way to go otherwise you'll have been abandoning the film or even condemning it because it doesn't look like TOS. A fresh start, OTOH, should go over better.

Ah... another "he said... she said... they talk" news. ;-)
But didn't we have that Khan-comparsion before somewhere?
How much money do they get for talking like this?

Yep. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have already compared the new movie to The Wrath of Khan. It appears now it is Kevin Smith time. And finally, someone calls the movie a reboot. Go figure.
