Bruce Greenwood on Playing Captain Christopher Pike and Star Trek Movie Secrecy

Features

By GustavoLeao / 15:55, 23 October 2008 / Star Trek: Nemesis

UGO posted a new interview with actor Bruce Greenwood, who plays the role of Captain Christopher Pike in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie. Here are excerpts of the interview (beware of minor spoilers)

UGO: Well, there's a role that you've recently wrapped, another great leader, not of our time, but of the future, and this of course is Captain Christopher Pike, who is a captain of The Enterprise prior to Kirk. (Not the first captain of course, there were others in between.) Can you tell us a little about your role as Captain Pike, on Star Trek?

BG:
Well, I'm literally sworn to secrecy in many ways. So I can't give you any story points at all.

UGO:
But you did work with Chris Pine on some of the scenes, correct?

BG: Oh, yeah. I worked with all the kids. I think, I don't know, but it felt to me on set, particularly with the vibe that JJ creates on set, that it's going to come off really well. I mean Chris is fantastic, Zack [Quinto] is really, really good. I think they made really wise choices in the cast. And JJ, of course, is force of nature.

UGO: Had you seen any of the episodes with Chris Pike in the old days? Did you go back and look at those tapes?

BG:
Yeah, I went back and watched all the Jeffrey Hunter stuff.

UGO:
Are you gonna' rock that same hair style he had?

BG:
No, I'm not going to look like him. I haven't got that kind of ‘do going on.

UGO:
He did have a killer ‘do going on. Can you tell me if your second in command on your Enterprise is a female like it was on the episode, The Cage that saw Christopher Pike?

BG:
(giggling) I'm sorry you're breaking up.

More from Greenwood on the secrecy on the set and his other projects can be found here.

Nov 23Chuck returns to NBC with a special two-hour show on Sunday, Jan 10, 2010, before returning to its regular time slot, Mondays at 8pm on the following night. It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. For sure this is part of the new timeline. I guess I know now why they decided to call the villain NERO! The historical Nero is famous for burning Rome. He did that to make space for new gigantic buildings, for an updated version of classic Roman architecture. It was still the city of Rome after Nero but not your father's Rome but a new and improved, up-to-date version of Rome...

Now, this Romulan Nero guy basically does the same within the Trek universe. He figuratively "burns" the timeline, leaving space for new and improved designs and creative freedom. Maybe that's what the writers want to tell us by calling him Nero...

Commodore Mendez had said to Kirk that Pike was "about your age" so I think that'll certainly change. That line never made much sense to me anyway.

Kirk did say that. On the other hand, for some reason, I always found Kirk's line at that moment a little mysterious. Because Kirk almost mumbles Commodore Mendez's answer to the question of whether he ever met Pike. Did you ever notice Kirk's mumbling reply? I just thought it was weird, slightly evasive response, even before this discussion. Also, he quickly diverts the focus to Spock explaining how he served with him. Was Kirk hiding something? Certainly not the intent but I can play along and say he did. Just a thought......
