The latest issue of Star Trek Magazine, out in the US and the UK, features a new interview with actor Gary Lockwood, who played James Kirk's best friend, Lt. Commander Gary Mitchell, in the 1965 Star Trek second pilot episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Here are few excerpts of the interview.

"I was about to do 2001 A Space Odyssey for Stanley Kubrick, and I was having a few drinks with Gene Roddenberry on his patio" Lockwood told the magazine "I had starred in Gene's pre-Star Trek series, The Lieutenant. As we had a drink, he told me about this pilot he'd done, Star Trek. It had problems, but they were going to re-do it. Gene then said "I created a part for you on Star Trek. I want you to do it as a favor for me. Would you ?'"

"I didnt think that pilot would be as good as it was" Lockwood confesses "Because it was a pilot, it was rushed, but when I made it, I must honestly tell you, I really didnt think it would be as interesting as it all turned out. I truly think Star Trek became a hit because the world was ready for it and Gene was the right guy to deliver it."

Gary cracks me up!! | Report this post to moderator

I met Gary Lockwood at Jimmy Doohan's last convention in Hollywood. He lives just over the hill from where I am from. He is very funny and just a totally real guy. He aparently likes to, or used to, fly and we talked about airplanes and stuff. Just very enjoyable guy to be around.

I too would love to see Mitch in the movie. He's a critical character and has a major impact in Jim Kirk's life. It should be part of the movie. Certainly, if not this movie the next one.

Loved to hear Gary's interview on how he got the part. Just sounds so cool.....

Huge missed opportunity. So little is know about Mitchell, it could have been a great role with a built in "end" and would have given Kirk/Spock friendship more of a foil. Too bad.

I still think that the Star Trek XI writers choose to ignore Mitchell (since part of the movie takes place in Starfleet Academy) and so they did a retcon on the Kirk/Mitchell friendship, and instead choose to focus on the Kirk/Spock/McCoy relationship.

    Something like this?

“Don’t worry about that, Bones. I’ve already taken care of it. Dr Mark Piper, an old pro. He’ll keep sickbay under control until you get back. You just concentrate on getting well again…”

“Captain, about replacing other injured personnel---”

“Feel free to assign whom you will to communications and helm, Mr Spock. But if you’ll check the computer logs I think you’ll find I’ve already arranged a transfer for the new navigator. Until Chekov is back on his feet. An old friend.”

“Indeed? When shall we expect the young lady aboard?”

“Why, Mr Spock, you do have a sense of humour after all. The ‘young lady’ is Lt Commander Gary Mitchell.”

“Oh. My apologies. An efficient officer?”

“Of course, Mr Spock. One of the best in the fleet. Serious, even stoic. Dedicated. Mind only for his job and for his work. I’m sure you two will hit it off.”

“I look forward to it, Captain.”

    “As do I, Mr Spock.”

I thought he was dead. Must've been thinking about someone else. Just saw his most recent pic on IMDB - taken 4 Feb 2008 - and he looks like he could still play Gary Mitchell (with the gray hair on the temples, yet).

His daughter's pretty cute, too. :-) Go over to IMDB and do a search.

It would be a real shame if Mitchell, Kelso, Alden, & Boyce are completely ignored in the reboot. These crew members make up the first year of the 5-year voyage in my opinion since WNMHGB was stardate 1312, The 13th month of their 5 year mission? I know no real explanation has been given for stardates but I'm sticking to the whole month idea.

"It would be a real shame if Mitchell, Kelso, Alden, & Boyce are completely ignored in the reboot."

Kelso and Alden? There's no way those two were ever even considered--and there'd be no reason to consider them. There are only so many characters you can work into a two-hour film without underutilizing the cast. Kelso and Alden are minor, minor footnotes--you might as well include Mr. Desalle. Far more important is Christine Chapel--I have to wonder where she is. Even Janice Rand and Kyle would be more important to include than Kelso and Alden.

Well, there's really no point in trying to make sense of the stardates from the original series--they were all over the place, and non-sequential.

The funny thing is that there was some talk a while back about Timothy Olyphant possibly being in the new movie and too bad he's not because he could have been a good Mitchell. He kinda looks like Lockwood.

The question of "where is Gary Mitchell" since all this reboot talk started has fascinated me. Where in Star Trek episodic canon has Gary Mitchell been mentioned anywhere besides in a pilot episode? Between WNMHGB and the Cage, there are a dozen things that didnt carry to the finished product. Gary Mitchell is no more necessary to faithful trek than is Dr. Boyce
