Gary Lockwood Remembers "Where No Man Has Gone Before"

By GustavoLeao / 08:29, 21 October 2008 / General Star Trek

The latest issue of Star Trek Magazine, out in the US and the UK, features a new interview with actor Gary Lockwood, who played James Kirk's best friend, Lt. Commander Gary Mitchell, in the 1965 Star Trek second pilot episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Here are few excerpts of the interview.

"I was about to do 2001 A Space Odyssey for Stanley Kubrick, and I was having a few drinks with Gene Roddenberry on his patio" Lockwood told the magazine "I had starred in Gene's pre-Star Trek series, The Lieutenant. As we had a drink, he told me about this pilot he'd done, Star Trek. It had problems, but they were going to re-do it. Gene then said "I created a part for you on Star Trek. I want you to do it as a favor for me. Would you ?'"

"I didnt think that pilot would be as good as it was" Lockwood confesses "Because it was a pilot, it was rushed, but when I made it, I must honestly tell you, I really didnt think it would be as interesting as it all turned out. I truly think Star Trek became a hit because the world was ready for it and Gene was the right guy to deliver it."

Something like this?

“Don’t worry about that, Bones. I’ve already taken care of it. Dr Mark Piper, an old pro. He’ll keep sickbay under control until you get back. You just concentrate on getting well again…”

“Captain, about replacing other injured personnel---”

“Feel free to assign whom you will to communications and helm, Mr Spock. But if you’ll check the computer logs I think you’ll find I’ve already arranged a transfer for the new navigator. Until Chekov is back on his feet. An old friend.”

“Indeed? When shall we expect the young lady aboard?”

“Why, Mr Spock, you do have a sense of humour after all. The ‘young lady’ is Lt Commander Gary Mitchell.”

“Oh. My apologies. An efficient officer?”

“Of course, Mr Spock. One of the best in the fleet. Serious, even stoic. Dedicated. Mind only for his job and for his work. I’m sure you two will hit it off.”

“I look forward to it, Captain.”

“As do I, Mr Spock.”
