TrekMovie. com posted more details about Star Trek Countdown, the IDW prequel comic book mini series, focusing on the origins of Romulan villain Nero, written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones from a story by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurztman with art by David Messina, on sale January 2009. (Beware of minor spoilers)

According to TrekMovie, this comics prequel, which is said to ‘take us right up to the movie,' is primarily set in the time before Nero goes back in time, specifically the Next Generation era after Star Trek Nemesis. The main characters for the prequel will not be the young TOS crew but Nero and the elder Spock (and possibly familiar characters from the TNG era).

Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci told TrekMovie "["Star Trek: Countdown"] is about how you connect the Next Generation era to our continuity, inspired by when we last saw Mr. Spock in [fifth season TNG episode] "Unification""

Assuming the Roms take a ship back, it's late 24th century tech versus early(earlier) 23rd century tech and the USS Kelvin doesn't stand a chance.

You'd think those 30th century time cops would monitor the situation and prevent it, but then you wouldn't have a movie plot.

Thanks to ENT, I'm still nervous about restarting a potential franchise on a movie where time travel is the core reason for the plot to be set into motion. But I've got my fingers crossed!

"Outer Space: The Last Frontier.
These are the trips of the Star Trek Enterprise. Its five year plan calls for us to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly fly where no man has gone in space. Live long, and be happy."

They must ensure that the damaged timeline is completely RESTORED... except with better looking costumes, sets and props.

I wonder how the Enterprise, barely out of Spacedock with a crew of young officers and cadet Kirk in command, and not Pike, will confront Nero post-Nemesis timeship Warbird. Tough times ahead for the NCC 1701, I guess.

Yeah - when the going gets tough, the tough head to Risa.

Is Kirk a cadet prior to his promotion to captain? Hasn't he been serving on another starship or teaching at the academy prior to his commission to the ENTERPRISE? I seem to recall Gary Mitchell saying you sink or swim in Kirk's course. And then I seem to recall he served on another ship and received many honors for his service. Something like - it's been very long ago now.

Maybe he was back at the Academy for advanced training, sort of like the graduate-level War Colleges run by the current-day US military services.

According to the Entertaiment Weekly spoilers, Kirk is just a cadet when he sits in the captain's chair. So this movie may take place before Kirk serving on the U.S.S. Republic and the U.S.S. Farragut, pre-The Cage. Or it is indeed a alternate timeline caused by the destruction of the Kelvin and the death of George Kirk, as some have speculated.

        Time will tell.

No, the EW article says only that "Kirk spends much of Star Trek dressed in respectable black -- space-cadet colors in Abrams' Trekverse -- as he undertakes a perilous, destiny-seeking journey."

From the MTV interview: "When asked why Kirk was wearing black instead of the standard yellow captain's shirt, Lindelof said that the black uniform was, in fact, a captain's uniform -- and the color was 'significant' to the story surrounding this scene."

He taught at the academy as a lieutenant and narc'd on Ben Finney (maybe on the Republic), and served under Capt. Garrovick on another ship, but all that history could be changed if Jim's evil uncle/stepfather has anything to do with it.

I'm wondering if they kill George thinking Jim will never be born, but then we find out Mom got impregnated just before George shipped out.

That's the fun of the months leading up to a new movie! All the theories and speculation! Usually different parts of people's guesses pan out.

Concerning the timecops stepping in, they may recognize the events of this film as a predestination paradox that has to take place for the existing timeline to unfold the way it does.
