ALSO CHEKOV WASN'T EVEN INTRODUCED TIL SEASON 2. WHY IS HE THERE?

I will use the same explanation given when people wonder how Khan recognized Chekov on Ceti Alpha V when the episode where he is marooned by Kirk was in Season One, before we ever saw Chekov.

Just because WE never saw Chekov on screen in Season One, does not mean he wasn't on the ship somewhere. As an ensign, it is very likely he was in a less glorious position and was promoted to the bridge conn later on in the mission. Sulu was a botonist before he became a helmsman remember.
