The Guardian.co.uk posted a transcript of their live webchat with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, in which he answered readers questions. Here are excerpts.

What made you touch Star Trek?

JJ - I think it was the opportunity to tell a story that was based on a world and characters that I felt were just compelling and optimistic and the opportunity to treat that universe with a kind of energy and excitement and the resources we had. It didn't feel like a classic reboot or prequel. It is a brand new thing inspired by characters that are poised to make a big comeback.

You have never been seen in the same room as Dr Who renvigorator Russell T Davies- are you actually the same person?  If you aren't (and the jury is stll out), would you like to director or script an episode of Dr Who?

JJ - It would be an honour to be asked to participate in Doctor Who. They are doing a spectacular job. That is not to say I am not already involved as Doctor Who! It would be a wonderful thing and I am a fan. If Russell would ever like to direct anything in my place I would be equally honoured.

The full transcript is here.

Anyone see this in the stores? I was in Best Buy this weekend and saw a boxed set of the first 6 movies with "Original Crew Movie Collection" artwork on the box. Kind of felt my heart sink just a little when I saw it.

I would love to see Mr Abrams direct or write an episode of my favorite TV Series - Doctor Who. Peharps guest starring Patrick Stewart or Leonard Nimoy ? That would be really cool.

Yeah. He can direct that DOCTOR WHO special that's rumoured with Patrick Stewart as the Meddling Monk!

Can't you just see a final shot to the movie:
Ext.: Space. The Enterprise makes a majestic turn and warps out to unknown adventures. As the shot fades we hear the familiar whoop-whoop of the TARDIS and see the call box light and familiar shape fade into view as the scene ends.

    It could happen...
