J.J. Abrams on Star Trek Canon, Says He Wanted the Movie to Feel Real

Features

By GustavoLeao / 12:45, 25 September 2008 / Star Trek: Nemesis

In a new video interview to BBC's Radio 1, director J.J. Abrams talked more about the challenges of making a new Star Trek movie. Here is an excerpt, courtesy of TrekMovie.com

"It is very funny because when you get into what is known- they had blueprints that they sold, but a lot of it is hypothesis, like made up. ..." Abrams said "The show itself made mistakes. The idea that there is a canon of Trek and what is honest to goodness Trek and what you can't change - The show itself changed history and revised things a lot. So clearly the approach was we want to make this thing feel real. It is so insane, the idea of these massive starships. The goal of this movie, despite it being called Star Trek, despite the pointy ears and all the established fans and hundreds of hours and almost a dozen movies and all that kind of stuff, we actually feel this is kind of a new thing and this is legitimate. Which is probably the biggest challenge, because it is by default so close to being campy.[...]"

"Abrams and his hacks"

Well, THAT was predictable. Sheesh.

You raise some good points and DS9 was definetely a thoughtful show. But the sad reality is that I dont think the American film audience is ready for any mature Trek where the good guys and the bad guys are not clearly seperated out.
None of the Trek fims have any depth- maybe Wrath of Khan to a small extent. Most of them are just mindless thrillers that provoke little thought. They are not exactly 2001 -A Space Odyssey. A film like that today as a sci fi film would almost certainly bomb at the box office. The TNG films were the biggest joke of all (except for the passable FC), with again nothing really thought provoking. Try to remember one compelling character moment from any of the TNG films.
It would be the death knell of Trek to produce a BSG like film with social commentary. It would flop commercially and that would be the end. Give the people what they want- attractive actors, thin plots, throw in some Orion slave girls, cute one liners, and awesome special effects.
Trek is now just a business- all the creativity and lust for fresh ideas have been bled dry from the franchise.

I guess you might as well give up, close the door and never even consider watching another Star Trek film, or tv show, or anything Star Trek at all. Since, after all, it would always pale into insignificant triteness compared to the greatness of DS9. Well. DS9 was good - not all the time, but generally, but it wasn't my favorite ST series. TNG was definitely. And, Voyager too sometimes came up with good episodes, despite some lesser efforts.
I can have enjoyed TNG and DS9 without having them prejudice in advance or lower my enjoyment of a new venture. Too bad you have such limitations built in from the get go - but, that's your priviledge, of course.

Quote from Muldfeld:
Long live Ira Steven Behr and his vision.

The good in DS9 isn't a divining rod for failure in ST:XI.

Even if Abrams creates a perfect reflection of GR's vision, fans who express "hate" toward TOS could call the new movie a creative flop.

Gee Ira, tell us what you really think! Having that hard a time finding work these days, eh?

Of course, you could have read the article and replied to that and had some insight about how they're actually making this movie, instead of some kind of random stupid slam against it.

Yeah, it's too bad you want Trek to be like The 4400. Cancelled.

You don't like it? Don't watch it, but come up with an actual reason instead of some WHARRGARBLE about DS9. Why even bring up Heroes? That has nothing to do with Abrams.

Let me guess, you want Shatner back too.
