Simon Pegg Says New Star Trek Movie is Going to be Huge

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:54, 23 August 2008 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Aint It Cool News posted a new interview with Star Trek actor Simon Pegg, conducted at the recent Comic Con. Here are few excerpts.

Capone: You put it out there. Tell me what you can tell me [about Star Trek]. I'm sure it will be fine with everyone involved.

SP: Ah, there's so little I can tell you. I can only say what I have seen is really, really cool. I think J.J.[Abrams] was sensible to not just come here with nothing to show the fans. I think there was a consensus that, yes, STAR TREK was going to be here this year [neither the new STAR TREK movie nor Paramount had a panel at Comic-Con this year]. And J.J. made a point of not short changing anybody by just bringing in something that wasn't finished or doing another "Here's the cast" kind of thing. And I think it's just going to serve to make the anticipation greater. When he finally is ready to show something...I mean, I've seen a little bit and I was screaming. I had my hand over my mouth "Oh my God!" It's so good. I just think it's going to be huge.

Capone: Can you give me any insight into playing Scotty and how you played him?

SP: [...] Out of respect to James Doohan, and I'm on record as saying this so this is nothing new, I just approached it as any actor would with a character. I didn't look at James; I just looked at the character and said, "Okay, he's Scottish and he works in space and he's an engineer and he's a bit of a brawler. He likes to drink. And I approached it like that. It was easy to do because it was all there in the script. I was fortunate to have Chris Doohan be my assistant in one of the scenes in one of the rooms on the Starship Enterprise. Perhaps moving things around. [laughs]

[...] Chris is James Doohan's oldest son, and he contact me, and we hooked up. And it was really lovely to have him sit next to me so we could talk. And he plays one of the crew, and he told me loads of stories about hanging out with his dad on set. He was there when they were filming "The Trouble with Tribbles" and I think they apparently opened the little hatch where all the Tribbles were and send them spilling everywhere much to his father's consternation.

The full interview is here.

Shatner will be promoting the movie before it's release.

1. If this is going to be the way to keep up the hype for the next 256 days, I'm gonna throw up.

I'll take a stab at 1, cause I'm staying the hell away from 2.

The "hype", if that's what it can be properly called at this point, is an organic consequence of Paramount's moving the film to May, and JJ and his cast are merely answering questions put to them by third parties. Or rather to NOT answer questions they've said over and over again they can't answer. So unless Paramount ties them all up in a warehouse for the next 8 months (not exactly in a hot new actor's best interest) we'd all better get used to the media, and gee, WE FANS "hyping" a movie that JJ has tried pretty hard to keep from even being talked about until closer to the premiere. The fault, if that's what it is, lies not in our Stars but in ourselves.

Keep the barf bag handy.

2. Do you think we will ever get the Shatner Seal of Approval? Perhaps someone should show him the first cut.

We don't need the Shatner seal of approval. Shatner's bipolar approach to Star Trek (he wants to be associated with it, he doesn't want to be associated with it) over the years means it can be an excellent movie whether he agrees with it or not. Shatner may have played Kirk, but that doesn't mean I need his green light to enjoy the film. Since I don't like him as a person, it's actually likely that I'll enjoy the new film more if he DOESN'T like it. It's high time people stopped granting Shatner the mantle of chief Star Trek critic, a title he doesn't deserve. Make up your own mind, and stop needing Shatner's "okay" like a baby needs its milk.

"Do you think we will ever get the Shatner Seal of Approval? Perhaps someone should show him the first cut."

Why? His opinion of the film doesn't really matter one way of the other.

No, nor does the movie need it.

He will first see this film at the premier..not a screening room -- if he even goes. And if he doesn't attend, I can imagine the firestorm on this website from the Shatnerbators blaming J.J. for alienating Shatner from "his own" franchise.

Its all paramount propaganda to sell the movie.
I'm sure that movie will do well at box office.
I have seen all the cast in others films and they
are good performer. But having James Cawley as cameo
in the film,it could indifferent fans view of the movie. But wish him luck. Also,
I have seen Paul Sieber of the phase 2 cast and he very cool kind of guy and talented.he's a natural and funny.

cheer!
