SyFy Portal has revealed that Sci Fi Channel and MGM have cancelled the hit sci-fi series Stargate Atlantis, starring former Voyager actor Robert Picardo.

MGM revealed that they intend to continue the Atlantis story in the form of  Direct-to-DVD movies, and the first movie will be written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, to be released on DVD in early 2009.

"We're excited to tell' Atlantis stories' on a bigger canvas," said Stargate producers and creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper in a statement. "The successes of the two original Stargate direct-to-video movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise."

"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, senior vice president of programming and original movies at the SciFi Channel.

Quote from DustMan:
Headlines can be inspired by wishful thinking, but they should be based in fact.

Indeed, but that expectation too is rendered by wishful thinking. ;-)

In this instance, there could be a degree of misinterpretation here by someone whose native language isn't English. The quote from Wright and Cooper does focus on "a bigger canvas" of the direct-to-video medium.
