The latest issue of SFX magazine, just out in the UK, features a new interview with actor Karl Urban, the new Leonard McCoy from J.J. Abrams Star Trek prequel movie. Here are a few more excerpts from the interview.

Since the original Dr. McCoy, DeForest Kelley, passed away in 1999, did you feel at a disadvantage to Zachary Quinto, who had Leonard Nimoy as a mentor for playing Spock ?

Urban : I am very thankful to have had such a legacy of work to look at. But Zach spent a lot of time with Leonard. I was really envious of that.

What research did you do ?

Urban : Re-watching everything again. I had grown up with these characters. I was very familiar with the fabric of their relationship.

It's been 17 years since the original Enterprise warped off the big screen. Is the world ready for her return ?

Urban : It's the perfect time to bring it back and show these characters in their early years and get a bit of a backstory

How well do you think this movie ties in with the Trek mythos ?

Urban : If you are watching the 60s TV series, it would be like you were listening to it on the radio before and now you are going to see it in high definition.

Any thoughts on playing McCoy in either movies or a spin-off TV series ?

Urban : I would clearly love to carry on with that cast. We had such a wonderful time shooting, we were constantly cracking up. But it's too early to speculate. We really have everything going for us.

The way Urban is speaking here it sounds like a decision has yet to be made as to whether there'll be a Trek 12, or if the cast will be back for it. Yet didn't Simon Pegg or one of the other actors say they're already contracted for a couple more films?

Yeah, but those couple of sequels will only happen if this one is a big hit. And I mean really big.

I wonder what that threshold will be? Considering the way things are unpredicatable in the entertainment business, even if the film doesn't do Dark Knight or Iron Man business, it could still be considered a success and sequel-worthy once DVD/BR sales and international box office are tallied.

This is the best quote I have seen yet about the movie -- I hope it works out that way.
