Legendary writer/artist John Byrne posted a character sketch of Captain Robert April, the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 as seen in the Animated Series, at his message board.

Apparently, Captain April will be a central character in the upcoming Crew comic book mini series from IDW. Thanks to "Ro-Dan for the tip.

of the thread Gustavo:

"Speaking of April --- he is not the central figure of the new mini, tho he does figure prominently in the second half."

And check out this old school ship design he came up with....the NX-01 shoulda been along these lines:

scroll down...it's with the Enterprise

Annnnnd scroll down and you can see that the design lineage is *almost* at Constitution levels:

Can't wait for this series. Byrne is firing on all cylinders with Trek!

I always hoped he'd do a Pike, or April era comic....looks like that dreams about to come true. Man, I can't fuckin wait! I can honestly say nothing from or announced by DC or Marvel has got me as stoked as I am for these books. Which is weird because I'm usually ambivalent about Trek comics.

    Very nice Lensman!

When I look at the ship drawing, it reminds me of a cross between the Connie, NX and the Excelsior class. It certainly is a legacy design that fits nicely in the universe.
