Newsarama posted a report about Pocket Books and IDW Publishing panel at the San Diego Comic Con in which were revealed some of the plans for future Star Trek comic books and novels. Here is an excerpt of their report :

The reins of Star Trek [comic book] editorial were handed over from Andrew Harris to Andy Schmidt, whose new office is barely even furnished. He spoke of talks with Pocket Books to use material from their novels and perhaps even create a cohesive continuity between the two mediums. fans were excited to hear about a possible Titan comic book or even an Excelsior comic based on the adventures of Captain Sulu. [Andy] Mangels, someone who helped create most of the characters created to fill in Riker's ship's ranks, said he would love to see them in another medium.

IDW went on to announce that there was going to be a second Alien Spotlight series, focusing on the Ferengi, the Klingons and, interestingly enough, the Q. They'll also be doing their own Mirror Universe story, Star Trek: the Last Generation, which will be set during the 'TNG' era of Trek. Captain Sulu of the aforementioned Excelsior will make an appearance as the plot will center on the Klingon occupation of Earth and Picard leading a resistance against the conquering Klingon Warlords.

The full report, in which they also discussed J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie impact on the comics and novels, can be found here.

What you have out now is quality stuff, even if I have B&Med about some of it. I think the planning shows well. Don't rush the product out -- keep the quality. There's been a pretty healthy balance between TOS and TNG. I'll take quality over quantity any day. Online surveys perhaps might help, in the same way that Hasbro answers questions/considers requests from SW collectors? Just a thought.

Having a comic series that ties into the novels is a good/neat idea, though I think the publishing schedule of the novels needs to be more set than it's been, though their release schedule for next year looks as though that might be fixed.

I like the idea of mini-series to test the waters. Titan and Cap'n Sulu are good titles to go after. Having writers of the novels write the comics is a great idea -- and I hope to see it continue. Also going after some of the shows' writers is this Trek fan's dream come true. It doesn't get any more "authentic" Trek than this.

I'm impressed. The future of Trek has been placed in good "comic" hands.

Yeah, it seems that the Star Trek franchise is finally starting to finally rise from the ashes of the Berman era. Hopefully this new movie will do great, which I believe it will. People won't be able to resist it.
