More excerpts of the interview conducted at last weeks TCA press tour in Los Angeles with Star Trek movie director J.J. Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are online at The Deadbolt.

Why are you drawn to dark subject matter?

ABRAMS: It is funny. You know, looking at Trek, which has - there is some real weird and dark stuff that happens in it. But the truth is that Star Trek is so optimistic. There’s an optimism to Star Trek that is to me one of the things that was most appealing about the idea even of doing the movie, which is - while there is darkness that must be in contrast, and while there is real obstacle and an incredible villain and it’s terrifying and weird and creepy and scary and gross and all of the kind of things that you’d expect from this crazy sort of adventure, it’s also got a huge heart and a wonderful kind of family at the core of it. So while there are weird things that happen in Lost, Alias, and certainly in Fringe, something like Star Trek is ultimately, as I believe is the case with Fringe as well, a hopeful story.

There is no question that there is incredibly weird stuff that happens and people get tortured and hurt and the villains are evil and mean, but it’s part of defining who the good guys are. I think at the end of the day there are a lot of movies out there that are incredibly grim and very cynical and I don’t think that certainly Alias or Lost - and I can tell you with Fringe - these are stories that are ultimately very much about the people, totally humanistic emotional stories and good prevails. I’m always turned off by stuff that is too cynical and dark.

Was it a little surreal when you were on the set [of Star Trek] for the first time?

ORCI: Insane.

KURTZMAN: Yeah, it’s beyond - it’s like you’re in a dream.

ORCI: Out of body.

ABRAMS: It was weird.

Not criticising talking about Trek...it's the Fringe....how many times did he plug the Fringe in that one paragraph talking about Trek. THAT's what's pathetic.

If you notice in the photo, they were being interviewed in the Fox area of the TCA Press Tour and Fringe is going to be a Fox show! So in reality, the interviewer brought up Star Trek in a Fringe interview.

Much like how interviews with Patrick Stewart after a performance of Macbeth broach the subject of Jean-Luc Picard, the same will happen with J.J. and Star Trek. He has a hot ticket right now, so expect Star Trek to come up EVERY time he is interviewed.

Most excellent. Of the innumerable things Abrams could've said about how "cool" this movie will be, his first few points are the most critical for a story with conflict: Contrast, obstacle, and villain.

There's no such thing as "Good vs Bad", there's only a contrast between moral agendas. Even then, contrast isn't actionable without a perceived obstacle on one side or the other. These sparks ignite a championship between mutual villains (e.g. Kirk vs Kor).

This can apply to both forbidden love and war. (Spock is aghast at how Kirk and McCoy can openly admire Khan in TOS "Space Seed.")

Even while framing his thoughts during off-the-cuff Q&A, Abrams comes across as compatible to the Star Trek universe, minus Rick Berman's gross misconception about a future Utopia.

Okay..that's just pathetic... Fry me, roast me whatever, that paragraph about is just obsurd and cloyingly pathetic.

Cross-promoting a film is nothing new. More importantly, it shows an effort on behalf of the production team to plug their Star Trek creation. Does it really bother you that much? Would you rather they sit in their dungeons on Melrose and edit away -- saying nothing about a film they cleary love?

Holding the reigns to the Star Trek franchise is like captaining a ship on the Kobayashi Maru mission. It is the ultimate no-win scenario.

Then I went on to mention how I'd also been thinking about even if it's a stinker Trek will still rain cash down on Paramount.

Sure the movie will be great, etc. et al...but I was thinking earlier today...has anyone considered how this movie will be a slam dunk 100Mil movie the first weekend anyway just because Trek hungry fans are going to slam into the theaters like never before?

Even if it's a suck fest its going to make millions and we'll get a gauranteed sequel...which would then (hopefully) bomb appropriately if it were just as bad as the first. (That goes without saying...it could actually be good...but I'm playing devil's advocate here...)

The first movie will not be the judge of the viability of JJ Trek.

    Hello,
Cross-promting is a standard practice and since others "ASK" them the question shows how the interest is building.
As for saying that it will make a certain amount "just because" it is a Star Trek was what led to the Nemises movie.
Until May 8 and the movie comes out it is best to e optimistic and from what little has come out about the movie looks like they are doing the best to get the original and hopefully new fans tcome see the movie and love it so much that they will go to se it again and again.

The "it'll make money just because it's trek" was just a bad argument for Nemesis in general because it had only been a couple years since the last one and it was "time" for a movie, etc.

I'm all for the new flick - I'm just playing pessimist today. 5-6 years out from Enterprise and we suddenly have a knock-it-out-of-the-park film?

In the end, I honestly feel that MONEY is what's going to revive trek. It took money from Paramount to woo the writers, director, etc... Paramount has never before been wheeling to bank roll the franchise like this. I guess it also took DECISION MAKING ability because along with throwing wads of cash at it they made a decision to remove B&B.

If they had previously bank rolled a budget this large and brought in other writer/director/producer talent with the established actors and sets (TNG), I think we'd have had some great content anyway...irksome to say the least.

Of course you can also bunk that viewpoint by pointing to TWOK or TUC, FC...etc.. Geez...I guess Nemesis just blew the goat huh? From a story idea by Brent Spiner . . .

And in this case the interviewer did weave the web of name-dropping, by referring to Lost and Alias in relation to Fringe, which was conceived during a Star Trek writer-brainstorming session, according to Kurtzman.
