Hollywoodoutbreak blog posted an audio interview with Star Trek movie producer and director J.J. Abrams. Here is a transcript of the interview, courtesy of Sci Fi Pulse.

"Right not we have a cut of the movie which has about 12% of the visual FX near done - but the movie is working and that's what seems exciting to me." Abrams said "What's amazing about the movie is the people are awesome. The characters are alive and they're great and you love them. Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] wrote an amazing script and our amazing actors make it more amazing. It is really like... you know the fun of watching Zachary Quinto take on a role like Spock which is an incredibly deceptively complicated part. When you see the whole performance - there were things he was doing that I didn't even see or realise he was doing when we were making the movie - and to have Chris Pine come in and embrace this role of Kirk in a way that is so complete and emotional and funny and cocky and yet vulnerable. It's a wonderful thing. That to me is where I think the best news is. You need that to tell this story and it works. I think it is a testament to this movie."

The original report can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.

I'd like to hear more from/about Mr. Greenwood in the film. From what we know about the story, the Pike character occupies quite a lot of it. But no one ever asks about him. It's always about Kirk or Spock--entirely understandable. But when Greenwood signed on and seemed enthusiastic about the script, I was sold. I think he's great at his craft, especially at playing a leader, and I'm excited to see him in a uniform sitting in the captain's chair of Starfleet's big new starship, the Enterprise.

And did we ever find out if Number One is in this film and who's playing her? I think Catherine Keener would have been great. But maybe it's not that big of a part in this film.

Umm, technically you could say that about any interview or any press junket for any film that has ever existed.

I think you can see in the uber-enthusiasm all the actors and staff who have worked on this film has, that it will likely be a magnificent project. If they thought it sucked, they might give praise as directed - but it would be far less enthusaistic.

Either way, it's nice to see people here be excited about a new film, then pick it to peices before it's even released as per usual.

Does anyone really believe ........ | Report this post to moderator
By: GreatCzarsGhost (Odo's file, contact) @ 08:07:57 on Jul 16, 2008

Does anyone really believe that if Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto totally sucked as Kirk and Spock and had ZERO on screen chemistry, J.J. Abrams would be saying hey fans, I hate to say it but these two guys really suck?

Of course the answer to this question is NO.

It's good to be excited about the movie but just remember where the information is coming from.

No, he would not say they "suck". But he might parse his words in obviously careful ways that might lead a reader to suspect something. For instance, up until this there's not been much said about Chris Pine's performance. That was a little concerning seeing as how we've heard quite a lot about Quinto's, or at least his preparation. It might still be a bit concerning that Quito seems to be the first thing that enters Abram's mind when asked about what's good. He's then quick to praise Pine, but it almost seems as an afterthought, like "Oh, I'd better say how great Pine is or they'll think I'm damning him by omission."

I remember when Star Trek V came out. Deforest Kelley was on Good Morning America or something and he was asked point blank if he liked the movie. His body language and his careful words belied his real opinion. He said something like, "Star Trek was built on great moments. I think this film has some great Star Trek moments in it." I happen to agree with him, by the way.

Starting to look forward to the new Kirk and Spock...and crew | Report this post to moderator
By: OV-101 (Odo's file, contact) @ 07:39:22 on Jul 16, 2008

As time has passed, I am really getting excited about a new cast for such classic characters. Mainly because these guys seem to be not square pegs in round holes. The more I hear, the more I realize that JJ really worked hard to get the actors that fit just right. It is still weird that Chris Pine has been very quiet since the shooting has ended. That actually adds to the intrigue, however. I think no matter how much $$$ this movie makes, it will be a big hit in my book. Of course, I also hope it will be a financial success as well....and I think it will.

10 months and counting...AAaaaaah!

When you consider it - these actors are going to portray these iconic characters three times, at most. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the franchise after the third film (ST XIII). I'm sure they're going to do a fine job and make good movies.

I would like to see Nick Meyer - who is a friend of JJ Abrams - helm one of those upcoming Trek movies.

Yeah....(sarcastically) - they'll bring in Fez from "That 70's Show" to play a young Kahn and create some parallels to ST II. hehe

I'd love to see Nick's take with the new cast.

Like the other poster...I too have been wondering about the franchise "after" this cast. Will this cast be willing to reunite every 4-5 years for a movie for a while? Or will we recast everyone now and then? Or - worse - will they recast individual roles as actors lose interest or move on? Ugg.
