J. Michael Straczynski Says Babylon 5 Will only Return as a Feature Film

Features

By GustavoLeao / 06:43, 15 July 2008 / General Genre/SciFi

According to JMSNews, Babylon 5 producer J. Michael Straczynski posted in an online newsgroup that the only continuation of the series will be as a feature film, if that were ever to be green lit. Here is an excerpt of his post.

"B5:TLT was commissioned at a $2 million budget to, yet one more time,"test the waters" for B5. We did what we could with that, and that was that. As we did with Rangers, which also suffered from not having a lot of money because of concerns about "is there really a B5 audience?" Which is, of course, a foolish question from a studio that has never really understood what it has in B5."

"Of late, there have been more discussions from WB about doing more DVDs, again at a low cost, or a cable thing, again with minimal investment."

"So for the last few months, I've been giving this whole subject a lot of quiet thought. And I've come to a conclusion."

"B5 as a five year story stands beautifully on its own. If anything else is to be continued from that story, it should be something that adds to the legacy of B5, rather than subtracts from it."

"As well intentioned as Rangers and TLT were, as enticing as it was to return to those familiar waters, in the end I think they did more to subtract from the legacy than add to it. I don't regret having made them, because I needed to go through that to get to the point where I am now psychologically, but from where I sit now, I wouldn't make them again."

"So I've let everyone up here know that I'm not interested in doing any more low-budget DVDs. I'm not interested in doing any low-budget cable things or small computer games. The only thing I would be interested in doing regarding Babylon 5 from this point on is a full-featured, big-budget feature film."

"It's that or nothing."

Nov 23Chuck returns to NBC with a special two-hour show on Sunday, Jan 10, 2010, before returning to its regular time slot, Mondays at 8pm on the following night. It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. One question, I guess I am not getting the connection you made to TOS' Who Mourns for Adonais? I realize I am slow to pick up things, sorry :)

B5 SPOILER ALERT:

Well, in my opinion, the whole 4 years arc and was basically about finding out the Vorlons had appeared as angels on all of the worlds and they preach and instill ORDER. The shadows are like demons and they promote CHAOS. All Sheridan had to say was, "we've outgrown you! Go away!" And....they DID. It was a lot of buildup for nothing. Same think Kirk did in Who Mourns, except that worship was the source of Adonis's powers (along with the machine) and I felt that script was more poingnant (why can't we just love the Greek god; he and his ilk gave us so much). I found it silly that the Vorlons and Shadows actually left. I bet PLENTY of people would've been willing to worship the Vorlons AND the Shadows. Also, for people who urge order, the Vorlons weren't very into discipline. Sheesh. They just said, "you're right. We'll go." Not even HUMANS would do that, much less an advanced race like Vorlons. The plot was the same as Adonis---we told the gods we'd outgrown them and the myths they'd instilled and the need for a god-figure and we told them to piss off and they did.

I dunno. I love the Babylon 5 universe and even liked Crusade and the Lost Tales DVD. Go figure. I was open to more DVD movies, but I doubt that a feature film is gonna happen. Rest in peace, Babylon 5.
