Sci Fi Wire posted a new interview with Star Trek movie director J.J. Abrams, conducted during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., on July 14. Here are few excerpts of the article.

Abrams said that the film will explore the relationships among the familiar characters while dispensing with the Original Series' kitsch. "I feel like there's a certain thing that you can't really hold onto, which is, ... there's a kind of kitschy quality that must go if it's going to be something that you believe is real," he said.

As for Comic-Con in San Diego, July 24-27, Abrams expressed disappointment at not bringing the movie to the huge event, and added that the film is not ready to be show. "Our visual effects, unlike something like Iron Man, we have well over 1,000 visual-effects shots," Abrams said. "It's a huge thing. so i'm very disappointed, because the characters are so good, the actors are so good, that I would have been psyched just to show some of the stuff that's about the people. Because it's not really about the visual effects. But with so little done ... . And this was a big kind of strategic decision on [Paramount's] part. so I was disappointed."

More from Abrams on Star Trek can be found at Sci Fi Wire.

Over a thousand FX shots! Less than the Star Wars prequels, but a lot more than any Trek movie before.

In a photo (below) from the new Enterprise bridge, there appears to be large glowing gauges, a big red rocker-switch, and what looks like fabric-covered acoustic speakers -- all mounted on a shiny brushed-chrome console.

I call that "kitschy" -- particularly for a 2008 vision of 23rd century technology -- but Abrams could have something else in mind...

Uh oh...I'm taking cover now, before the storm begins.

Well, he's absolutely right. Deep Space Nine and Enterprise didn't try and change the TOS "look" when their crews visited TOS era ships. They just sort of went with it. This is a monumental film with a large budget however.

If Star Trek truly is about the writing, story and characters like you ALL say? Then making the production design more realistic should certainly not be the end of the world. Lord knows, it's not even news anymore - we've known the look has been updated for months.

Good point steve. The difference I see here is that DS9 had to use TOS sets since they use TOS footage. Even then there were settle differences. For example, I found it interesting that Sisko (when on the 1701 bridge) was using some of the buttons like a rollertrack-type ball. Also, I noticed the modified some of the noises when a button is pressed (like the Captain's chair when he calls McCoy to come to the bridge). Now, imagine the change when a whole new movie is being made with new actors playing familiar roles.

I am very excited about the new look. It is so badly needed and I hope everyone will keep an open mind about it.

      Cannot wait.....cannot wait....cannot wait....!

Oh, I agree with you Steve. I just meant that those determined to trash Abrams for every single comment he ever makes are going to have a field day over that particular statement.

Film still has a long way to go? | Report this post to moderator

Perfect! That means that J.J. still has time to squeeze Shatner into the film so that it will not fail at the box office! In fact, I was taking a tour of the Paramount lot the other day and snapped a pic of Shatner taking a break from filming! The pic is below:

My Shatner jokes are no older than people insisting that he belongs in this film, and that it will fail without him. As long as those Shatner articles creep up on here and his apologists spew forth with excuses why he is KEY to the movie? Expect me to head off the rediculousness at the pass with funny images to keep them honest and lighten up a usually firestorm topic.

The big difference this time: This was NOT a Shatner article, and until you posted that picture NO ONE had mentioned Mr. Shatner. No one had insisted that he belongs into this movie. It was YOU who brought Shatner into this.

That was part of the joke.. the joke was, knowing Trekweb.. someone probably WOULD mention that at some point, hence my "head them off at the pass" reference. Again, most diehards have no sense of humor -- but as long as I think it's funny, thats all that really matters. You can take your Valium now :)

It seems that your humor was lost in the translation. Gotta work on my English. Or maybe I really forgot my sense of humor when I got up this morning.
Anyway, I just find the whole Shatner debate rather tiresome. Both sides tend to take it too seriously, at least those who still take part in that discussion. Myself, I just don't really care if he's in it or not.

But after all, since cdydatzigs blurry, shaky "projects" using his mother's camcorder never get any attention (don't forget, he's an "independent filmmaker" that doesn't understand basic filmmaking), and he can never get any work making fucked up company logos because he's always misspelling words (he's a "graphic designer", which is a title that requires no licensing or experience), he has to get some attention SOMEWHERE, doesn't he? And the anonymous internet is perfect for that. Especially someone who was a little kid when even TNG premiered.

Boy, it would really piss cdydatzigs off if he knew every single one of his postings has been (and/or will be) top-posted responded to, and that he'll absolutely never get the last word.

Yeah...he said that - right after boasting about how many effects it has and comparing it to another effects filled movie - so temper your anti-visual effects JJ stroke.

As much as everyone sings "it's about the story" - it's just as important to realize it's also about how the story is told. In Sci-fi effects are VERY relevant to adequately suspend disbelief they have to be done right. Otherwise you're back to the early days of Dr. Who. That worked back then when it WAS advanced effects...but it doesn't work today.

So it's about the story and how it's told. Sometimes that involves lots of special effects!

Relax! Up until that point all anyone ever talked about were the effects and how great they are going to be. I was just happy to hear a reference to the characters and that they are important to the story. It was just refreshing to hear. If anything I was being sarcastic.

No... I think all the effects in the movie should be puppets and small models. Did Paramount sell the old model of the NCC-1701 used in TOS? I say let's use it for the film! BRING BACK THE GORN SUIT! And for intermission, a short cartoon made by our friends at Filmation!

NOW I think you're on to something. A trek movie where it truly isn't about the effects. Completely story and character driven. Clearly THIS will be the break-out hit to bring back the franchise. Surplus Halloween makeup kits - huge foam rocks - off the rack alien masks. It's also going to save a ton on budget! This movie is going to break the bank on box office. Never before has such a story/character driven movie wowed audiences . . . . we all knew the effects were irrelevant . . . !
