J.J. Abrams Says He is Disappointed for Not Bringing Star Trek to the Comic Con

Sci Fi Wire posted a new interview with Star Trek movie director J.J. Abrams, conducted during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., on July 14. Here are few excerpts of the article.

Abrams said that the film will explore the relationships among the familiar characters while dispensing with the Original Series' kitsch. "I feel like there's a certain thing that you can't really hold onto, which is, ... there's a kind of kitschy quality that must go if it's going to be something that you believe is real," he said.

As for Comic-Con in San Diego, July 24-27, Abrams expressed disappointment at not bringing the movie to the huge event, and added that the film is not ready to be show. "Our visual effects, unlike something like Iron Man, we have well over 1,000 visual-effects shots," Abrams said. "It's a huge thing. so i'm very disappointed, because the characters are so good, the actors are so good, that I would have been psyched just to show some of the stuff that's about the people. Because it's not really about the visual effects. But with so little done ... . And this was a big kind of strategic decision on [Paramount's] part. so I was disappointed."

Oh, I agree with you Steve. I just meant that those determined to trash Abrams for every single comment he ever makes are going to have a field day over that particular statement.

Good point steve. The difference I see here is that DS9 had to use TOS sets since they use TOS footage. Even then there were settle differences. For example, I found it interesting that Sisko (when on the 1701 bridge) was using some of the buttons like a rollertrack-type ball. Also, I noticed the modified some of the noises when a button is pressed (like the Captain's chair when he calls McCoy to come to the bridge). Now, imagine the change when a whole new movie is being made with new actors playing familiar roles.

I am very excited about the new look. It is so badly needed and I hope everyone will keep an open mind about it.

Cannot wait.....cannot wait....cannot wait....!
