Stratos is a rip-off of Cloud City in Empire Strikes Back... Just kidding.

"The Cloud Minders" is a decent TOS episode, one of the best of the third season, with good acting from Bill Shatner and Nimoy (for the third season anyway). Looking foward to the remastered version...

My only annoyance with it? When did Spock become so casual about Vulcan mating practices that he just starts spitting details to a blonde bimbette he barely knows.

There is no blonde bimbette in TOS "The Cloud Minders."

Lovely Droxine is a cultured member of what Spock describes as "a totally intellectual society", though she's naive toward ugly realities which have been skewed by the Stratos class-system. Nonetheless, Droxine is shown to question their rigid protocol ("Father, are we so sure of our methods that we never question what we do?")

Spock truthfully affirms Droxine's query of something she'd heard about Vulcan sex. Spock recognizes Droxine's coy romantic interest, to which he responds with the kind of emotional intelligence and charm that's written for Sarek toward Amanda in "Journey to Babel."

        It just doesn't work.

In every time before...and since when it's brought up Vulcans don't discuss it with their best friends. They barely want discuss it with people who are already familiar with it.

Droxine is just a little bit Paris Hilton. She's going to go down to the mines at the end? C'mon. They're going to hand her a pick, she's going to hold it between thumb and forefinger, let out a plaintive, "Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww," then head home to Stratos.

Girls who spend their entire lives posh, dainty and "cultured" do not grow up to be coal miners.

Most people are more sexual toward a potential mate than toward a friend. There's nothing in TOS to suggest that Vulcans behave otherwise.

Spock lets Droxine know that her "extreme feminine beauty" is "disturbing" to him. Spock's attention to Droxine has the personal manner that he also shows toward beautiful Zarabeth in "All Our Yesterdays". Both of these females appeal to Spock, as more than just friends.

Spock sees that the Stratos class-system has created a misunderstanding of the harsh planet below, so he reminds Droxine of the beauty in all knowledge. She speaks only about visiting the mines, not becoming a zienite digger...

Spock: "There is great beauty in the knowledge that lies below, and only one way to really experience it."

Droxine: "I shall go to the mines. I no longer wish to be limited to the clouds."

So Droxine was a potential mate? No.

That sounds more like it with the mines though.

She's going to take a nice little tour and then go home, maybe give the peons a hug and be happy with herself and her moral superiority like all those people who demand you give to PETA and the starving in Africa and have never given a dollar themselves.

Of course she is. Spock answers Droxine's coy question about sex by implying that her extreme feminine beauty could disturb his Vulcan mating cycle!

Spock is written to show immediate admiration for "a totally intellectual society", which makes Droxine "worthy" of interest from a brainy Vulcan.

Well, to tell the truth Spock was somewhat out of character in a lot of third season episodes.

I thought CBS abandoned the remastering when HD-DVD went the way of Beta? Was this just one of the episodes they finished before Blu-Ray was declared the king, or did CBS decide to go ahead and continue remastering all the episodes?

CBS did remastered all episodes (including The Cage) and season 2 will be available on DVD August 5th and Season 3 will be available on DVD later this year. But no more combo HD DVD / DVD Box Sets - only DVD sets.

I'm glad to hear all the episodes were completed.

Whatever anyone might think of the "upgrades" that were done to the series, I think they were made with the right kind of respect and love for TOS, and brought a lot of new attention to a classic series. If nothing else, it gave us all another excuse to watch and discuss some great episodes.

And I'm sure sooner or later we'll be able to buy it all in high-definition.

to coincide with the release of the film in theaters. There are also whispers that the original movies are being readied for late '09 when Abram's new film will be approaching its own video release.

Wow, I totally forgot about this episode. Can't wait to see it with the new city in the clouds. Would have like to learn what eventually became of the cloud minders and troglites (sp?). No the worlds best trek episode but was a good parable on discrimination and bigotry (sort of).

The remastered images look great. Everyone, including me, harps on the third season as being terrible, but there really are some great episodes. Some of my favourites are in the third season. That being said, it is still the worst of the three seasons.
