A mediocre episode | Report this post to moderator

The whole Rayna/Kirk thing is so out of character for Kirk and just downright silly.

The only saving grace is Flint. He's a wonderful sci-fi idea and he's portrayed beautifully.

Well, it's been proven throughout the series that Kirk wears his emotions on his sleeve. And who knows how hard it was for him to forget Edith Keeler? You figure, he seduced most of those other space babes in order to extricate his ship and crew from a dangerous experience (the Triskeleons, the Kelvans, the alien Sylvia in "Catspaw," etc.), but this may have been the first time in the series other than "City On The Edge Of Forever" that Kirk actually fell in love. Here was a woman who was almost perfect, in his eyes; the fact that she was an android (which he only discovered later) didn't change that. So it may not be that much out of character for Kirk.

And actually, I think Spock's helping him to forget was actually a holdover from one of the early drafts of COTEOF.

James Daly's portrayal of Flint was very good, and if you read the Garfield and Judith Reeves-Stevens novel "Federation," you'll see Micah Brack (who Flint referred to in the last act) plays a very pivotal role in Zefram Cochrane's search for a faster-than-light mode of travel. Nice touch, that, and a nice homage to this episode.

I agree. One of the worst of the third season, up there with "The Way to Eden" and "Plato's Stepchildren". Weak episode.

Yeah, Kirk's a total asshole in this episode. Rayna's a babe though. hehe

        Hey ceti ;)

I'm going to play Devil's advocate here and say this is one of the better TOS episodes. It's one of my all-time favorite Trek episodes actually. Is it really so out of character for Kirk here? Maybe, but I can think of a dozen instances in other episodes that would be much more out of character. We, as human beings, have out of character moments. That's life.

I'm actually surprised to see you guys rag on this episode. I never knew it was one regarded as "mediocre" and I'm frankly shocked to see it classified in the same category as trash like "The Way to Eden" and "Plato's Stepchildren." Then again, I guess I shouldn't be *too* surprised; everyone hates season 3 and I don't find it any worse than any of the others. They all had their stinkers, season 3 no more than the rest.

As someone else mentioned, the whole idea behind Flint is pure genius and the story is executed well. It's one of those episodes I can watch over and over and over and never get bored of.

          Hey Riker..er nat ; )

I don't actually think the episode is crap, or even mediocre. The idea of Flint is awesome. I actually enjoy Kirk running around like a horny toad in heat in that episode. lol. But I just think Kirk was written a little out of character. I didn't feel sorry for him at the end of the episode where Spock had to telepathically remove Kirk's love for her. Whenever I see it I'm like, "serves you right you house-wrecker!!". lol

            My real problem is this:

Kirk's not a homewrecker. He had no way to know. And by the time he found out, he felt what he felt.

My problem is that we've seen throughout the entire series that he'll do anything for his crew. Exterminate a world if he has to. Let the true love of his life die. But with Rayna he's so vexed in a matter of hours that he has to be REMINDED that without the serum they came for the crew will die?

            No.

But, as I've said. Flint is outstanding and makes it worth watching. But even that can't quite make it a good ep overall.
