Star Trek Deep Space Nine Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods

Review by Jeff Ayers

After a two-year wait for the next installment in the saga of Deep Space Nine, Olivia Woods delivers a two-sided book.  I'll explain why in a minute.  The path to publication has been fraught with mystery: the original author and publication date vanished into the alternate universe and then a new author and date were announced.  Now it's finally here and no, it's not going to disappear.

Side One of the book takes off as a healed Kira berates herself for trusting Taran'atar.  Ro refuses therapy to repair her healing body so she can use her resources to track him down.  Commander Vaughn must try to fix his damaged relationship with Kira.   The main problem everyone faces is Iliana Ghemor, a Cardassian woman who claims to be from the alternate universe and brings the terrifying plot that has been brewing for some time in our realm.  There is more at stake than just our universe.

After only 137 pages, flip it over for Side Two and the following 161 pages tell the tragic tale of Iliana Ghemor, who grows up watching the occupation of Bajor destroy everything important in her life.  Angry, she decides to join the Obsidian Order and a plan begins to unfold that will change her life forever.

After finishing this, the first question I asked myself was, "That's it?  Two years for this?"  Let me say right now that the book is well written and I enjoyed it.  The problem is that the saga and characters we want to read about and have been heavily anticipating only last for 137 pages, so nothing much happens.  While Iliana Ghemor's story is interesting and vital to what I predict is coming next, her story has bad timing.  If we didn't have two years between tales, it would have carried more resonance.    Readers will finish this book faster than expected. Let the deafening roar for the next one begin!

Could someone do us a big favor and list all the official post Season 7 DS9 books in order that they should be read?

I remember reading the 4-parter (I forget the names of the books right this minute) that re-launched the series in book form and loved them, but it looks like I missed a bunch.

I'd really love to go back through and read those first ones plus any others, especially since I'm going back through the TV series on tape (that I inherited from my late 86-year-old grandmother who absolutely LOVED Quark!).

Thanks!

Thanks for the great review, Jeff. It's good to know ahead of time not to expect huge advancements in the post-season 7 DS9 storyline. It still sounds interesting enough, even if it's just to wet our appetites for the next book. I hope there's more Taran'atar, at least!
