William Shatner Remembers His Days as Captain Kirk in The Original Series

Denver Post posted a new interview with Star Trek star William Shatner, in which he revealed that he recently watched the second season TOS episode "A Piece of the Action". Here are few excerpts.

"I haven't seen myself playing Capt. Kirk in a long, long time," he says. "And I watched it now, from my perspective of 40 years later, and I thought, 'You know, that's rather good.' It's a starship captain trying to do the accent, the Noo Yawk accent, trying to play tough, trying to be one of the guys. It's not quite right, but it's what a starship captain would have done - a decent imitation, enough to fool those guys but not the audience."

"The actors were wonderful. And I didn't care about the sets or anything like that or the cheesy spaceship," Shatner says. "I think that's what happens in 'Star Trek.' Your eye goes past all the faults because you're concentrated on the actors and the plot."

More from Shatner on the character of Kirk can be found here.

Nah, I've got to disagree on those two. Go to imdb and you'll see. Besides, Shatner's been around longer. And face it. Deniro's played one character type in most of his films...

Well, I'll stand by my statement. DeNiro is most famous for his tough-guy act, but his tender, confused character in Awakenings was quite a departure, as was Frankenstein's Monster. I don't know that Al Pacino could've done Frankenstein credibly. Midnight Run was a great comedic twist on his tough guy role. And his southerer in Cape Fear was impressive for his ability to shed his NYC persona. Jackie Brown was interesting because he played sort of a dumber guy, which was interesting.

Ed Norton is amazing to me. He plays a pathetic guy so well in Rounders, but he's legitimately scary in American History X. He plays a great psycho in Primal Fear and a great uptight lawyer in the People vs. Larry Flynt. His uncredited role as the king of Jerusalem in Kingdom of Heaven...I'd never have guessed it was Ed Norton.

Now, come on, you can say Shatner is beloved, but he's only ever played two roles in his life....the tough hero and the funny Shatner. Kirk/T.J. Hooker/Rescue 911 and then his Denny Crane self. Really, I think he's done his best acting as Denny Crane. His serious moments are pretty special...but I do think he sort of plays himself. I don't think he's an actor like Cuba Gooding Jr. or Sean Penn who can really immerse himself in a role...instead, he's more in the Clint Eastwood mold---someone who plays versions of himself in different situations. Now, I LOVE Shatner...but I've never heard many people say he's that varied an actor. Really, playing a hero in the past and in the future and in the 80s doesn't count as "varied."
