ComingSoon.net posted an exclusive interview with actress Zoe Saldana, the new Uhura from J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie. Here are few excerpts from the interview.

CS: I know you can't tell me too much about "Star Trek" but can you talk about the experience at all? What was it like to step into those iconic shoes - or boots as the case may be?

Saldana:
It was amazing! It was a humbling experience. I met Nichelle Nichols, I worked with Leonard Nimoy. I was not a "Star Trek" fan before the film. Now I can honestly say that out of respect for the pioneers of this amazing conception, I am. They are amazing. They are the most graceful actors I have ever met. To work with J.J. [Abrams] I just hold him in the highest regard. Up there with James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, they are my idols and my everything. J.J. I hold in that regard and at that level. He's younger and those directors, Steven would go to the set constantly to visit him and lend his support to J.J. and Jim invited him to the ["Avatar"] set to go see it. I don't know who was more in awe. It's amazing to witness that and be in the middle going "Oh my God." I feel like the selfish one because I'm working with all of them. I feel very blessed and I think "Star Trek" is going to be amazing. Have you seen the trailer? It says "Under Construction"? I got goose bumps! I'm like "Dude! What are you doing?" It's amazing.

CS: Can you tease if you wear the mini-skirt? Did you get your legs in shape for this role?

Saldana:
All I'm going to say is that for some reason every man on set noticed when I was working. It was like "God, I don't know - Was it my line? My deliverance? Oh. Okay." That's all I'm going to say.

CS: Any one else in the new cast that kind of blew you away?

Saldana:
Everybody - from Eric Bana to primarily Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, they were amazing. I really hope that the fans embrace their interpretation of Kirk and Spock. It was so genuine and it came from the heart, with the most respect.

CS: Okay, you've got to give up one little thing: did you get to say "Hailing frequencies open?"

Saldana:
[long pause, then grinning widely] F*ck, yeah!

Quote from Zoe Saldana:
"It's not your job to be conscious of the mission you have. It's your job just to do it."

Thirty year-old Saldana babbles like a 13 year-old. She worships Abrams and Spielberg as "my idols and my everything", and speaks of role models as magical beings who'll stop being "alchemists" if they ever become conscious of their craft. As though Gene Roddenberry et al had no idea of how morality plays can serve as a compass to the public conscience.

Not that there's anything "wrong" with such naivety, but a fictional character can't display any visceral depth that the actor doesn't possess. Nichelle Nichols as Uhura was much more than long legs in a short skirt.

Contrast Saldana to Zachary Quinto, who emotes an insight that compliments his 31 years. Anton Yelchin, at 19, makes Saldana sound like a bewildered child. Even 14 year-old Dakota Fanning generally speaks with more coherence than Saldana.

Fuck, Zoe? Yeah! ;-)

Does anyone else agree with me that that was probably the most fun interview we've heard to date? I know we are accustomed to hearing the actors gush about J.J. and the movie (which is a great thing obviously), but I could actually picture her in this interview saying all those things from the heart, and not just B.S.ing like actors do at press junkets. Very cool :)

FUCK YEAH! Zoe's got me now. I'm all pro-Zoe. Great interview and I LOVE how she answered the hailing frequencies question. That doesn't give one damn thing away about the plot...it just says to fans, "it's okay to put a LITTLE nostalgia in there and recognize we're doing a new version of an old favorite." And it shows that Zoe realizes its pretty cool that she's Uhura, an icon.

Initially, I wondered if her part Hispanic heritage might distract from my vision of TOS/Nichelle Nichols Uhura, but between her attitude and that picture in this article, she looks and sounds the part 100%. Nichelle Nichols had this style and demeanor that put one in mind of Diana Ross/the Supremes, and the picture in this article makes Zoe look kind of like someone from the Dreamgirls movie, an homage to Motown, etc. So that's 100% fitting. And it sounds like she's got a fun attitude about the sex-symbol stuff with the comments about every man looking at her.
