Nov 17 | Originally hired as co-executive producer to help with the second half of the show's first season, Kevin Murphy has now taken the reins of Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel on Syfy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He now serves as an executive producer along with Ronald D. Moore, David Eick and Jane Espenson and oversees the day-to-day functions of the show.

Nov 12 | Star Trek star Zachary Quinto is loosely attached to star in the romantic dramedy Whirligig, reports Risky Business.Quinto would play the lead role in the independent Canadian film, which is aiming to shoot early next year. The movie centers on a man who, in a misguided attempt to woo an older woman, befriends the woman's adopted son.Chaz Thorne is directing the pic, based on a screenplay by Michael Amo, creator of the Canadian supernatural series "The Listener."

Nov 11 | The CNS Foundation, is hosting an on-line charity auction at www.charitybuzz.com.   One of the items they are auctioning is a signed movie poster of the new Star Trek movie which has all the cast members and writers.  The president of our organization is Carol Abrams, JJ's mother,  and she arranged for the donation from Bad Robot Production Company.  J.J. Abrams is also a major donor to their organization. The funds raised will go to help find a cure to neurological disorders in children.  The auction link is here.

Nov 10 | Candice Bergen, Charles Lisanby, Don Pardo, Gene Roddenberry, Tom and Dick Smothers and Bob Stewart have been selected as the next inductees into the Television Academy's Hall of Fame. They will be honored at a Jan. 20 ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel. "This year's inductees have challenged and shaped popular culture, changed television for the better and entertained us royally while doing so," TV Academy Chairman-CEO John Shaffner said. According to Film Music Society, Alexander Courage, composer of the original Star Trek theme and an Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated arranger for TV and movies, died May 15 at the Sunrise assisted-living facility in Pacific Palisades, Calif. He was 88.

Courage's fanfare for the Starship Enterprise, written in 1965 for the first of two Star Trek pilots, "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before", was heard throughout the three original seasons of The Original Series and has been reprised in all of the Star Trek feature films, from The Motion Picture to Nemesis, and several of the TV series, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation in the 1980s and '90s.

Courage wrote the original score for the following TOS episodes

 

  • TOS Season 1:
    • "The Cage" (first pilot)
    • "The Man Trap"
    • "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (second pilot)
    • "The Naked Time"
  • TOS Season 3:
    • "The Enterprise Incident"
    • "Plato's Stepchildren"

    Bill, this eight-disc Superman CD box set with Courage music for Superman IV The Quest for Peace is not available on Amazon. How can I find it ?

    As you know, I am a big fan of Courage score for Superman IV, another "bad" movie I like a lot. Regards,

    I will miss Alexander Courage. He was incredibly talented and did a lot of little and big jobs before Star Trek. However, IMHO, his music was the beacon of exploration and hope that Star Trek represented. His work will live on for as long as the stars twinkle in the night sky.

    I too would hope for some sort of recognition of his great work somewhere in the upcoming movie. JJ, make it so!

    As reported by SCI FI Wire in November 2007: Michael Giacchino, who shall compose the score for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie, says he'll retain at least the opening theme music from the original series by Alexander Courage.

    "I think that the thing to do would be to hold on to the only thing that does speak 'that says Star Trek' universally, which is the [opening theme from the original series]

    "I grew up listening to all of that great [Trek] music, and that's part of what inspired me to do what I'm doing."

      I just found out about Mr. Courage's passing this morning from film and soundtrack restoration producer Mike Matessino, who (along with Lukas Kendall) restored and recently released Courage's complete score to "Superman IV" as part of the eight-disc Superman CD box set. I'm just stunned by the news. It just goes to show how out of the loop I am without a computer at home.

      That makes the second composer this month we've lost - only a few days ago the fellow who composed the classic "whistle" theme to the Andy Griffith Show passed away. Just yesterday I was thinking about a tribute piece to Courage, and on a lark I pulled out my copy of Jeff Bond's book The Music of Star Trek and went straight to the Courage interview. And this morning as I left my house to run a few errands, what CD did I happen to grab but the "Superman IV" CD.

      Courage was definitely a gentleman and a true artist in every sense of the word. He'll be sorely missed.

      The loss of Alexander Courage is very sad news. A look at his IMDb listing reveals how much he contributed to film, going all the way back to his work on MGM musicals such as Singing in the Rain. I

    Wow, I was truly sadened to hear of our loss of Mr. Courage. I had read a bit about him a couple years ago. While many worldwide will always recall his " bring right to mind" music, those close to him will remember the kind man he was, a gentleman, and artist and mentor.
    I would sincerley hoppe Mr. Arbrahms will include an " In loving memoryof" in his upcoming film..... the very least that could be said of such a fine man.

    I was 8 years old when I first heard his Star Trek Theme..... HE certainly made an impact.

    To his family: Many share your grief. God bless you in your time of lose.

    When I saw First Contact, I remember watching a little kid just basking in the moment, waving his arms like a conductor when the Courage fanfare played. I remember feeling pretty much the same way when I was a kid and heard the theme towards the end of Star Trek IV.

    He composed one of the most recognizable, memorable pieces of music in television history. As much as John Williams nailed Indy and Star Wars, Alexander Courage nailed the TOS theme and that great fanfare. Those ten notes alone have actually brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.

    A great loss.

    He was also Jerry Goldsmith's arranger on The Motion Picture. Interestingly, in the Captain's Log scenes it was decided to underscore with the original series theme. Goldsmith told Courage to do whatever he wanted as it was his theme, and Courage ended up arranging a nice, mellow string arrangement for those scenes. He was a good composer. Too bad he didn't do more work on TOS, but after Roddenberry went behind his back and wrote lyrics to it just to file for half the copyright, I can understand.

    Along with the Enterprise, Mr. Courage's fanfare is arguably as necessary a part of Star Trek as any of the human beings which have occupied rolls in the series and movies. To both fans and the casual viewer, nothing sums up Star Trek like those ten notes. And to think it was there from the very beginning. An amazing artistic achievement.

      Alexander Courage was a prodigious talent, who not only worked alongside greats like Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, but was a terrific composer in his own right. Film Score Monthly recently released his complete score to "Superman IV" as part of their Superman box set, and it's a revelation (even if Williams penned the themes).

      totally agree... those notes and the enterprise = trek.

      you can mix up most of the rest, but not them..and as they ain't broken...why bother.

      sad about Mr Courage ...maybe he wil get dedication on the new film.
