J.J. Abrams Says Star Trek Universe Has Never Been Given This Treatment

By GustavoLeao / 09:13, 1 May 2008 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Canadian Press posted a new interview with Star Trek movie director J.J. Abrams. Here are few excerpts.

"The whole point was to try to make this movie for fans of movies, not fans of `Star Trek,' necessarily,"' Abrams said. "If you're a fan, we've got one of the writers who's a devout Trekker, so we were able to make sure we were serving the people who are completely enamored with `Star Trek.' But we are not making the movie for that contingent alone.

"You can't really make a movie for them. As soon as you start to guess what you think they are going to want to see, you're in trouble. You have to make the movie in many ways for what you want to see yourself, make a movie you believe in. Then you're not second-guessing an audience you don't really have an understanding of."

"It's a chance to see what Kirk and Spock would look like done now," Abrams said. "What's thrilling about it is how great the cast is, how remarkably talented and funny and just spot-on they all are."

"I feel like this is so unlike what you expect, so unlike the `Star Trek' you've seen. At the same time, it's being true to what's come before, honoring it," Abrams said. "I can say the effects for `Star Trek' have never, ever been done like this. ... I can only tell you the idea of the universe of `Star Trek' has never been given this kind of treatment."

The full interview is here.

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

And my point is, Paramount has given TREK first class treatment before with ST:TMP. So, I don't get Abrams point. I think he misspoke. He should have said,"TREK hasn't had this kind of treatment since ST: TMP."

I would say that I understand your point about TMP. I would say this is movie might be in a different league. This Star Trek incarnation is the first being produced and directed by people who had not worked in the franchise before. After listening to people both online and just friends and acquaintences, they have shown interest in this movie whether they like Star Trek or not. Also, I notice that people are not giving this movie the typical, "Oh, another Star Trek movie" response. I have yet to hear non star trek fans give this move the "stink eye" yet (just because it's a star trek movie. Maybe this is not typical but I would say this movie may very well have the biggest buildup and hype than even TMP. Especially with all the media resources noadays. This is just my spin from my little corner of the world and may be completely inaccurate. But hey, as Bones said in TVH, "Nobody's perfect."
