J.J. Abrams Says Star Trek Universe Has Never Been Given This Treatment

Canadian Press posted a new interview with Star Trek movie director J.J. Abrams. Here are few excerpts.

"The whole point was to try to make this movie for fans of movies, not fans of `Star Trek,' necessarily,"' Abrams said. "If you're a fan, we've got one of the writers who's a devout Trekker, so we were able to make sure we were serving the people who are completely enamored with `Star Trek.' But we are not making the movie for that contingent alone.

"You can't really make a movie for them. As soon as you start to guess what you think they are going to want to see, you're in trouble. You have to make the movie in many ways for what you want to see yourself, make a movie you believe in. Then you're not second-guessing an audience you don't really have an understanding of."

"It's a chance to see what Kirk and Spock would look like done now," Abrams said. "What's thrilling about it is how great the cast is, how remarkably talented and funny and just spot-on they all are."

"I feel like this is so unlike what you expect, so unlike the `Star Trek' you've seen. At the same time, it's being true to what's come before, honoring it," Abrams said. "I can say the effects for `Star Trek' have never, ever been done like this. ... I can only tell you the idea of the universe of `Star Trek' has never been given this kind of treatment."

(1) Actually, the film was budgeted originally at $8 million, and ended up costing $40 million to make in 1979 - a rediculous amount, but grossed over $100 million worldwide, so it was still profitable.

You're probably right about the amount spent--it's been a while and the old noodle isn't what it use to be. Despite the budgetary problems, they still green lighted a record amount of money for the film. I call that first class treatment.

(2) Getting all the cast members on board was not really cost prohibitive seeing as they were mostly only known for being on a 1960s TV show that was cancelled a decade earlier -- they were cheap to sign.

I wasn't thinking about the money spent on the actors, I was thinking about the risk factor of putting TV stars in one of the most expensive films ever budgeted. That took an enormous gamble. Risky and special treatment.

(3) I think everyone knew TMP would be successful because of what Star Wars had generated and the exponential cult popularity Star Trek was getting in reruns.

You never "know" what a film will or will not do. If there was a guaranteed formula, no film would ever lose money.

(4) I think Abrams was comparing his Star Trek film to the cookie-cutter Berman-era films of the 90's that never had a true "epic" feel to them. TMP was the last truly significant film in the Star Trek franchise... this one will be the second because of how much is riding on it, and how much it is being hyped amongst GENERAL audiences.. not just Trekkies who will fork over $10.50 anyway.

And my point is, Paramount has given TREK first class treatment before with ST:TMP. So, I don't get Abrams point. I think he misspoke. He should have said,"TREK hasn't had this kind of treatment since ST: TMP."
