Rod Roddenberry Praises J.J. Abrams, Says Director Will Stay True to Canon

SyFy Portal posted a new interview with Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry Jr, son of late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, in which he talks about his visit to the new Star Trek movie set and his meeting with director J.J. Abrams. Here are few excerpts from the article.

"I met with J.J. Abrams, but I didn't really see any of the main product," Roddenberry said, likely visiting when Abrams was shooting secondary shots and the like following principal photography. "What I did see, it looked great. The costumes, acting, sets."

"J.J. is such a regular guy, and seems so much like a fan because he gets it," Roddenberry said. "While he has to work the way you have to work in Hollywood and balance what the studio wants, he's really on the side of the fans. He really tries to stay true of the continuity and stay true to canon."

The full interview, in which Roddenberry also talks about his documentary Trek Nation, can be found here.

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

Steve, nobody here is doubting Roddenberry's lack of involvment in the Harve Bennett movies, but just the fact that you were a bit..aham...sarcastic towards the Roddenberry family.

Yeah, dunno how "Rod" became such an influential figure is trekdom. To me he's just some guy's son. Gene as with Lucas is great with putting together the "big picture" but when it came to details all I can say is "wow."
As for Kirk's death... I'm a Star Wars guy myself and I respect Trek but holy moses whoever came up with the idea to kill off Kirk the way they did should be forever shunned by the motion picture industry. Mind you most trekkies would prefer this person shot but there's no need to resort to violence.
As for Trek XI, I'm just praying that it isn't a hopeless piece of crap. For all those nay sayers I have to say this, IF anything JJ will produce a better film than Nemesis. (*awaiting flamage*)
