According to a report posted today at the redOrbit website, a crew is wrapping up a shoot on private property at Highway 119 and South Enos Lane for the upcoming Star Trek movie prequel. Here are excerpts from the article.

"They need to work quietly and confidentially so they can get their work done, so next year, we can enjoy a great movie and know portions of Kern County were included in that," said Board of Trade Executive Director Rick Davis "That's what the office stands so proudly behind."

The location is a stand-in for Iowa, Captain Kirk's home state, said a Paramount Pictures representative, who provided information under the condition of confidentiality.

The Bakersfield landscape plays a small role in the movie.

"Iowa usually looks pretty green, so that's what we were looking for," the rep said.

Shooting began Monday and the crew will move today to a part of the property away from the road. Filming should wrap up this week, then the movie will go into post-production, she said.

"This is not your father's 'Star Trek,'" the rep said. "It's a whole new cast, a whole new group, completely different from anything people have seen before and hopefully the old fans will like it as well as garnering new ones."

None of the lead actors are out on the property, and there's no real action in this scene, just moving shots, she said.

The full article is here.

Post production for a flipping year, and skipping a christmas season with absolutely no competition for a crowded May on a weekend that's never produced a hit movie.

You guys seem to forget that 'Star Trek' was pushed back along with a few other films so that Paramount could spread their completed features out over the gap caused by the Writer's Guild strike.

November/December are SAFE release months, thats why (a) the last four Trek films debuted in that time and (b) the studio moving the film to early-summer speaks VOLUMES about how good they feel this film will be. Rather than screaming bloody murder when something you dont understand is posted on here as news? Take a breath, don't overreact. Sheesh!

All I'm saying is what they're saying doesn't add up. Putting it in Mid-May against heavy competition makes no sense, and unfortunately no matter the quality most people aren't going to see Star Trek over Terminator 4 and Wolverine. The hype is at it's strongest this year and just to have it sit on the shelf past a date when it could have been all by itself just seems silly, especially when this is the last thing that Paramount really has.

I've posted the numbers before, but the bottom line is that there has not been a hit movie released on the second friday in May. First weekend has only really been successful for the Mummy and Marvel movies. I don't make movies, but I've spent far too much time researching market trends and box office grosses as a hobby.

This could be the greatest Trek movie ever, but if the audience would rather see other things, then repeat business if not initial business will die, and the franchise will as well.

The hype is at it's strongest this year

The strongest we've seen, but we've not even scratched the surface. This film is going to get more advertising and press coverage than any of us ever thought possible for a modern Star Trek movie. Current hype is still pretty much regulated to the fandom. Paramount is going to promote the hell outta this film in a manner to which Spider Man and X-Men films have become accustomed.

I don't know if we have reason enough to trust their intuition. There are so many things that can go wrong. They are gambling. Someone at Paramount has seen some early footage, and Abrams has managed to impress them because he doesn't rely too much on blue/green-screens. So he already has got something that looks good. A good early impression. But the movie isn't really made yet. The reviews aren't written, and the advertising campaign hasn't really begun. I don't feel like being optimistic just for the sake of being optimistic. We know nothing.

I don't undertstand why the move to summer | Report this post to moderator
By: VZX (Odo's file, contact) @ 06:06:21 on Apr 11, 2008

Really, do summer movies really make more money than December movies? Didn't the biggest movie of all time, TITANIC, come out in December? What about all the Lord of the Rings movies?
I would think that December movies are more for serious movie fare that has a wide demographic, rather than the mindless action of most summer "Blockbusters." I think this was a bad move by Paramount.

Do you think so ? I just dont know. If Star Trek XI is epic and good as every everybody at Paramount is saying, I think it has a chance for being a "2009 summer blockbuster movie". I did not lost my faith in this movie yet. Everything about this movie - the rumored storyline, the actors, the big budget - sounds positive to me. I am optimistic.

We'll see how optimistic you are once the movie opened. The question you should really ask yourself is "Is Star Trek still relevant?". I have no fate in Abram. I don't know why people are letting him write and direct because MI3 was a joke.

Well, I agree with you on this - MI3 was a mess, but still I am cautiously optimistic that Trek XI will be a winner, even will Abrams involved (and I was never a fan of Abrams). Bigger budget, epic time travel storyline, Nimoy back as Spock, Eric Bana as the villain, Captain Pike in command of the NCC 1701 - there is a lot of positive details that can make this a sure hit.

"Is Star Trek still relevant?". Yes, it is. Star Trek XI can prove that, I think.

I just don't get you sometimes, Gustavo. You really express a lot of love for things like Star Trek: Of Gods and Men, but then say MI3 was a "mess." I LOVED MI3. What was there not to like? Unlike the previous two movies, it actually had CHARACTERS, a personable villain, and a plot that made sense.

I think whomever said postproduction for a year is some path to hell is nuts. Most people won't know much about the movie until they star seeing previews and commercials. They won't know or care that Paramount sat on it for 7 months. And don't try to sell me on how bad May is for movies. It's been a LONG damn time since Star Trek had a hit on Christmas.

Ah please, dont try to understand me, Terry. My wife dont get me either, and she loved MI3. When I told her the same director was helming Star Trek XI, she was very happy. But dont try to get me - the fact that I love flops like Superman IV and Star Trek V and hate sucess like the MI series and Pirates of Caribbean is just confusing, isnt it ? Man, I am just a TrekWeb editor, I am not here to teach people what to like. It is a matter of personal taste, I guess. Go figure.

I more meant my post as a request to explain why you thought MI3 was so bad. What didn't you like about it. The one comment that it was "a mess" just didn't clear it up for me. I'm not going to hurt you or anything. ;) I was just curious. I really liked the movie a lot.

Well, I ddont know if I can explain here why I thought it was a mess. I am a big fan of the original MI TV Series (specially the Leonard Nimoy seasons) but I never got into the movies. Peharps I just hate Tom Cruise, thats it LOL But seriously, I guess I thought the acting, editing and directing on MI3 badly done and the script confusing. But as I said, thats just personal tastes.

Gotta agree with Terry here. MI3 was awesome. Had some great action, the music was well done, and was competantly directed, and is considered to be the best of the trilogy. It's quality was a large reason Paramount felt comfortable giving their last big franchise to Abrams.

MI3 didn't do so hot for two reasons, one being the overabundance of Tom Cruise nuttiness that hit while he was promoting it. What Trek fans should worry about is the second reason: The release date was early May. Once again, movies that come out that early rarely if ever do anything in the box office.

However, I'll put this down. If the movie is as good as we all hope, it'll open big, probably around 50-60 million, absolutely HUGE for a Trek film. It'll probably top out with about 130-150 million, really good for Trek, but not exactly making it's budget back. Hopefully Paramount will see it as an investment for the future and keep pushing it out, but it had a higher chance this winter.

            I hope I'm wrong.

Rotten Tomatoes agrees with us. MI1 got 67%, MI2 got 57%, and MI3 got 71%. I remember when the Abrams announcement came out, I was like, "well, if it's as good as MI3, that'll be awesome."

As far as May releases go...I think maybe it is slower than June and July because people aren't on vacation yet AND because studios hold back bigger movies until June, etc. HOWEVER, I think if there are good movies to see, people will go see them. I mean, if Indiana Jones was only showing at 3 a.m. on Tuesdays in March under a blanket, it'd do great. The fact that May 2009 will boast Star Trek, Wolverine, and Terminator 4 will, I think, motivate people to head to the theatres on weekends in May.

Not just those, but Pixar's "Up", Night at the Museum 2, and the sequel to the Davinci Code as well.

I want to see all these movies, and I most likely will...and that's a problem, because with so many feasibly great movies come out, I'm not going to have the time or money to see a movie more than once, even with my incredible love for Trek. And if someone like me will only get around to seeing it once, what does it say for everyone else?

I like it when RT agrees with me :)

I hope so, and I have a lot of faith in the movie itself...I just don't have a lot of faith in the audience finding it, as a lot of people just get turned off by Star Trek to begin with. Could really go either way, but it had a better chance this winter I think.

      Just frustrates me is all.
