In the past 2 days, Paramount removed the photos of every site in the face of the planet, minus TrekWeb. Weird.

Could Be a Relic, Jim | Report this post to moderator

As with other spy snapshots, the full context of the scenes is unknown.

The craft shown in these photos might not represent the "latest" 23rd-century technology found aboard NCC-1701. Just as, here in 2008, NASA's 40-year-old shuttles don't represent the latest 21st-century technology.

The vehicle seen in these images could be a relic in Kirk's childhood. Apart from its worn and dusty condition, the console shows an instrument which displays "FEET", instead of the metric system that's preferred in TOS (only a handful of episodes use "feet" or "miles" instead of "meters" or "kilometers").

This could be an additional way of indicating vintage technology, i.e. from a time before the US joined the world majority in using the metric system which would be adopted by a united Earth organization (and Starfleet).

Here's a zoom-sharpen-crop image of that "FEET" instrumentation...

Yeah, a metric system that is preferred in TOS and in what some of us, living in the 21st century, know as "the rest of the world"...

and more worn. We saw little of the Enterprise bridge, but what we did see looks more modern that what's in these pix.

No one seems that impressed with the uniform, but I like it. It's a nice wearable color, classy details. It's probably some kind of dress uniform, not an every day work suit. And visually, you don't always want everybody onscreen to look like a different Jolly Rancher. It gets busy what with all the toggle switches and blinking lights in addition. I imagine that's what prompted the tone-down and uniformity of the original crew movies. It looks practical and classy. I could even see it on the runway for Fall. :P

Almost Totally Satisfied | Report this post to moderator
By: VZX (Odo's file, contact) @ 09:13:44 on Mar 27, 2008

Wow. That shuttlecraft is impressive. Are the interios complete? I like how the exterior looks very similar to a TOS era shuttlecraft. I do miss the long engine nacelles along the bottom like the Galileo, but I'm happy with what they have. I really dig the control panel that it is not so streamlined and futuristic. What would really be cool if they actually brought in some pilots or engineers to help in the design and labeled what each control is supposed to do.

The uniforms are ehhh, my guess is the full red is a sort of dress uniform. I hope the movie doesn't always have the characters in that monochromatic jumpsuit.

Well, my hope has went up a little that this will be a good movie. I still can't see Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, but that shuttlecraft kicks ass. And, are those the first seatbelts on a Star Trek vehicle?

Didn't we see seat restraints in at least one TNG film?

Real Star Trek | Report this post to moderator

I think I like it at lot. It is retro-futuristic as others have said. It's also dirty, which might reflect Abrams' working theory that Star Trek is "real". It could also be because this shuttle's been put through the ringer. It looks big and the rows of seats with stap-ins reminds me of the troop transports of today, and of the lander in Aliens. Maybe this is Starfleet's answer to the Black Hawk helicopter.

Countdown to takedown | Report this post to moderator

Countdown to Paramount forcing TrekWeb to take the images down in 5...4...3...2...

Seriously, though, nothing hugely problematic here. In fact the designs seem closer to the way things looked in TOS which is comforting (to the poster who says the drama is most important, yes it is, but this is a franchise that has spent the last 40 years debating how many rivets the second hull of the 1701 has, so it's a big deal for details to be consistent with the original series).

The only concern I have is the insignia looks closer to the TNG-era Trek logo and it also appears to be a pin as opposed to being sewn in as it was in the series. But this is minor, TOS established that different branches of Starfleet used different insignias until TMP anyway, and we have no way of knowing in what context this uniform is being used in, if at all.

Regarding my opening comment, AICN said Paramount forced them to take the images down in record time. Personally, if Paramount wants to avoid another 14 MONTHS of this sort of thing, they'd be better off releasing some publicity pics now. Yes, I know they want to keep as much a surprise as possible, but that's simply no longer possible in the Internet age (I expect the script to appear online before summer, despite their best efforts). They should act now so that at least they have a little bit of control over the images that get out there. Hell, even a publicity shot of Nimoy in Spock make-up might be enough.

If Paramount forces us to take the pictures down, which is expected, the article will remain online with links to other sites featuring the photos. Plus, I also posted the photos in our message board, just in case.

Dirty and real - does it work for Trek? | Report this post to moderator
By: TrippingOverGod (Odo's file, contact) @ 04:53:10 on Mar 27, 2008

Of all these pictures, the one that really shows what the new sets are going to look like is that control panel. Highly retro and yet sort of futuristic. Remarkable job actually.

But does that really work for Trek? The TOS Enterprise and shuttles seemed pretty sterile and clean whereas this and especially the shuttle seem to be dirty just for the sake of being rugged and dangerous.

Either way, exciting stuff.

Yeah, I love it. Retro-future. It shows that there's BULK to this equipment. Now, there was bulk to the TOS stuff, but they looked more like models. This looks like the "real thing" from TOS. Man scraping the sky with his clever tooks, not plastic perfect controls.

Exactly. Star Trek really had become too sterile and perfect - this is a refreshing change of pace. I am growing more and more hopeful about this movie. : )

Not that I think Roddenberry's central message of peace, cooperation, optimism, and hope needs to follow the trend of "gritty" fiction. I don't think that at all. It's just...TOS defintely had sort of a submarine-in-space look that ENT tried to copy sort of, whereas TNG/VOY went the opposite direction with a very stelile and controlled environment. I didn't mind TNG's look in the slightest---it showed progress. I just like the idea of a TOS prequel showing that we're still in a stage that's midway between the Enterprise-D and the Apollo uncomfortable tin cans.

The shots of uniforms...they seem a lot more...well...uniform to me. I wonder how many people will pick up on that and hint that Abrams idea of a uniform one-world-government is a touch conformist and frightening. I take that back, I guess. I'm sure we'll see a lot of different outfits and civilians, etc, but at first blush, the people we've seen look more like a formation of troops from the Empire (Star Wars) than Starfleet. it's very visually striking, though.

I don't see how they don't eventually do some kind of updated homage to the 60's Jolly Rancher jammies. I think one of the actors has hinted at such in the final scene on the bridge. But who knows. Like you say, it's likely we'll see all sorts of incarnations of the Starfleet look during this epic.

Regarding your comments about visual style reflecting utopian virtues, I agree to a point. Like Bob Ross used to say, though, you have to have dark to show light and I've always taken the claims of Earth's utopia in the 23rd century with a grain of salt. It's an ideal, but an absolute reality.

But I do think that civilians and statesmen in that world look to Starfleet as sort of the embodiment of those abstract ideals, even if it's not always the case in reality. I imagine Starfleet expends a lot of sweat and tears keep what Earth supposedly has achieved by that time and recognizing that is a major step forward, IMO.

Of course that might be reading a lot into a couple of photos. But there's also the influence of current taste to consider as well. Star Trek has suffered in the past from too clean a look to me. I think there are clean streets on Earth and the bridge is always immaculate, but hey, you sit your boots down on a dusty world somewhere, you're going to leave tracks on the carpet. TNG's Adam's Mark look was a great departure at the time, but it's time for another one I think.

The drama is more important than the sets and costumes, but these images strike me as being a bit - dull. Nothing very interesting or original on the control panels and the shuttle looks like the larger Galactica shuttle. Again, not very important, but the comments made by cast members about the "awesome" sets lifted my expectations towards something a little different, more striking and novel.
